Sigur paints some more Austrian Napoleonics!
« on: October 02, 2019, 09:31:13 PM »
Here we go. Another small batch of 28mm Austrians.

2 Generalmajors (Perry miniatures), Grenzers (the chaps in the brown jackets, Perry miniatures), Cuirassiers (Front Rank), and a 3lbs cannon (Front Rank).

[never mind the flag pole on the cuirassiers in this picture. The flags are just a get-by solution for the photos; they'll get their proper flags when they're at home with the gentleman I painted these for]

I finished those over the weekend of our general elections, which was delightfully appropriate and inappropriate at the same time. :D These are for use with the Kugelhagel rules. Hope you like them!

Nice work!

May I ask, what's your method for painting white uniforms?

Thanks

Chuck

Neat painting, you picked up all the details and the minis are full of life!
The cuirassiers are majestic!
But what drives me crazy is the excellent hue of brown on the Grenzers, you made it look like real cloth!

@Digits: Thanks!

@OSHIROmodels: Cheers!

@Easy E: Yeah, well, it's 28mm. Those are always tricky. :D

@Shogun: Thank you. It's basically all over a white basecoat, washes, highlight, blackline, and go on from there. Warmer off-white for uniforms, cooler white (over a very grey-ish/light blue base) on the straps.

@DintheDin: Cheers! Yeah, they took ages to do, but I really like how the Cuirassiers came out. I love French cuirassiers, but the Austrian ones look really elegant. On the Grenzers' uniforms - I guess the slightly ruddy casting quality may have helped with that look. :D These are really great sculpts, but, as with some of the Perrys minis, the molds seem to be kinda old? So the casting isn't the best. Basically the brown was just dumb luck. I tried something out and it turned out to work well. :)

@batu: Thanks very much, Sir!

What washes do you use on white then please bud?  I’ve always wanted to be able to do that....🤔

It's a mix of brown and black. :) Just to get something in the recesses between uniform and other bits and to give it that slightly more natural looking shade rather than whiter-than-white. I think the key is trying to make the uniform and straps look different (since they're not only different whites, but also different materials. Hence the 'warm white' for uniforms and 'cool white' for straps and all of that. Didn't really go 100% through with that on the Cuirassiers here, as I wanted to make them look proper regal (as befitting my European outlook on heavy cavalry).

Earlier this year I did a bunch of Hungarian infantry (and some hussars) which may help display that idea as well:

Basically: it helps making the straps and uniforms look slightly different.
