Medium dragon recommendations
« on: August 13, 2019, 11:40:11 AM »
Hi all,

Recently it feels like there's been an explosion of well sculpted, believable looking HUGE dragons, filling a definite gap that existed a few years ago. However, I can't think of many dragon models of similar quality in smaller size brackets. My question is simple: what are your favourite non-massive dragon models? Everything from dragonets up to maybe 10, 12cm - no stardrakes or angrislaugs!

I really like the Tom Meier/Ral Partha ones - like the fellow below (not quite finished at the time). They're a good size for games like Hordes of the Things, as they go on a base with a 60mm frontage well. And they're all nicely distinctive.

If you skip the argument about what constitutes a good dragon and just focus on the suggestions and links, this thread from December is rather good: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=113834.0

The Aarklash Titan Dragon and the Cynwall Dragon from Rackham's Confrontation. They're my favourite dragon sculpts ever.

The Titan Dragon might be a bit large for your requirements, and the Cynwall one is technically a wyvern, but they're both awesome sculpts for sure... 8)

Well, for those sizes you could try the old Grenadier designs, now made by Mirliton - Terronus is my personal fav but probably too big, but many of the others are small enough for you.  http://www.mirliton.it/fantasy-25-28mm/dragons

Iron Wind Metals also has most of the Ral Partha dragons from over the years, almost all of which are in your desired size range.  http://ironwindmetals.com/store/index.php?cPath=266&osCsid=ha563r2rlppjfvquc27jtih7a2  I'm particularly fond of this guy, which is definitely right-sized.  http://ironwindmetals.com/store/product_info.php?cPath=266&products_id=7017

Feels like looking at older sculpts is the way to go, since modern dragons are so often quite large due to changes in casting tech and general scale creep.  Maybe a good long browse of the Lost Minis wiki would turn up more possibles?  http://www.miniatures-workshop.com/lostminiswiki/index.php?title=Main_Page

I like my dragons to be serpentine rather than bulky, so if you allow wyverns as a dragon sub-section, then the old Citadel Orc Wyvern is an absolute peach.

I love WizKids White Dragon (well .. the white dragon in the picture ...) ... although it might not exactly be medium.

NOTE: Not my dragon, just some randomly picked picture from the internet!

Bob Olley's Dragon under Dwarf Attack from Essex and Tom Meier's Cold Drake from Ral Partha, flawless castings from both manufacturers.

Reaper has perhaps dozens of dragons of reasonable scale (and up to...not reasonable scale).  5" or so is a bit small for a dragon in a 28mm game I'd think, so I'm not sure exactly how many they have in that size/scale.

They're also ridiculously cheap, and Bone is a pretty pleasant material as long as the miniature is a little larger.

I can't say I have a favourite, but I do like the simple Guthrie Cave Dragon (doesn't hurt that it's less than $5 on eBay!) :D

I just checked that out and, wow, winged toad and a cabbage does actually sum them up.
