Better era for skirmish, wotr or 13th century?
« on: August 23, 2019, 12:20:45 AM »
All,
I want to build some small forces to play Fistful of Lead Medieval. Which era gives more scope for small scale fights, wotr or 13th century?

To be honest I'd just go with an era that you like the look of and fancy gaming. One thing to remember is that heraldry gets more complicated as time goes on; something to bear in mind if you're planning on painting a lot of it!

Before you buy any miniatures I would make sure that I bought a good book on heraldry at the very least; something on heraldic banners, standards etc

Kind Regards,

Thirteenth was very common for small squabbles, particularly France on the Breton, Maine Normandy borders

13th century, as said simpler heraldry & more small squabbles.
The Debatable lands (the wild lawless area on the Scots English borders)
should give you plenty of scope:-
Feuds, Cattle stealing, Mafia style tit for tat killings, jail breaks, attempts to
arrest wrong-doers, sieges/attacks on towers & uneasy market days for just
a few ideas.

Nick, the rules are available somewhere or are they homemade by you?
I have the main rules.

I believe that Jaye is talking about a dedicated medieval set at some point.

I’ve tried Border Reviers a couple times before.  Like the figures, but the period never grabs me.  Right now, it looks like 14th century with the Claymore figures.

Claymore Castings are of very high quality and I own quite a few.; here are a few painted examples:

Most of the miniatures above are sold by Antediluvian Miniatures now along with when combined with Claymore they cover the Border wars/ raiding etc of that era nicely:

Very nice pieces indeed.  They look to be the work of the same sculptor as Claymore.

Yes, that's right, The Famous Mr Hicks. Most of these are now sold by Antediluvian Miniatures as I mentioned in my post above:

My interest remains I think in the 13th century, the classic chain mail and surcoat look.

C13th for sure. I like both periods (probably WOTR more to be honest), but for skirmishing, you've got all the Robin Hood and Ivanhoe style things you can do, with local barons and woodsmen clashing over merchant trains, border raids, rescues from castles, damsels in distress (or dat dress) … so many options.
'Sir John ejaculated explosively, sitting up in his chair.' ... 'The Black Gang'.
