Snowy terrain
« on: April 14, 2020, 10:11:19 PM »
Seeing as it’s been really sunny, it seemed like a good idea to get going on the snowy terrain project.  I’ve nearly finished two mats (5 x 5’ for skirmishes and a 9 x 5’ for battles), but here are some pics of my first trees.  These are cheap model trees from China with my own rocky bases and some customisation, but the dead trees are twigs of heather.  Pat Smith’s ‘Setting the Scene - Winter Wargaming’ was an inspirational read while putting this together; when it’s done, I hope to use the set up for mythological/ fantasy gaming but also North America.

Photos are modelled with some Red Book of the Elf King trolls by Lucid Eye for scale, and the background is a download from artist Jon Hodgson:

Nice result - I like the scattering of snow rather than the thick layer you often see on terrain.

One warning I will give for folk embarking on snow is not to use wood glue - I’m still rebasing figures where they have gone yellow as the glue aged  :o

Great looking terrain.

I have also experienced yellowing from I think three different causes:

1. Varnish
2. The paint itself
3. The glue used including PVA

Would Mod Podge work better? Indeed, the gloss variant could be effective for the snow effect. What are you using Andrew?
