French legere tactics question
« on: September 06, 2019, 10:48:43 AM »
I'm going to order some more legere figures, so that I can put more than just the voltiguers out as skirmishers to represent a battalion 'skirmishing with a formed reserve'; the same as I do for my British light battalions (see pics below). This is straight forward except for one thing. I don't know if legere battalions would put out chasseurs and hold back their carabiniers, or vice versa. Anyone, any idea? I ask because a lot of my legere have carabinier in bearskins.

Battalion formed in line with a light screen.

Battalion skirmishing with formed reserve.

Not sure about the legere, but on at least one occasion in the Peninsula, a couple French divisions doubled their skirmish screens by sending voltigeurs and grenadiers forward, backed up by the center companies in column.

Very nice work on the figures and basing.
And the glorious general led the advance
With a glorious swish of his sword and his lance
And a glorious clank of his tin-plated pants. - Dr. Seuss

O,

French Legere seemed to be very flexible, content to deploy Voltigeurs, Carabiniers and Chasseurs alike.

Of the examples I've read it seemds that voltigeurs and carabiniers were often sent forward first, perhaps then reinforced by chasseurs as the battle developed.
