Looking for small team rules suggestions.
« on: September 10, 2019, 05:35:51 AM »
So I'm looking for some rules for small teams, 10 or fewer models. Something like Frostgrave or Legends of the Wild West. Where you have a leader, 1-3 main members and a bunch of minions. I also like it to have an experience system for linked games with character development.

I have tried both Rough Star and Kill Team and neither quite fit the bill for me. I have been thinking of trying Galactic Heroes. Your all's input would be very helpful.

Infinity or (new) Necromunda might work in a pinch.

The former has no official experience system that I know of -- but mastering the rules of all the different troops will keep you busy enough so that you may not miss them right away 8). It's not my favourite game ever but it's pretty decent even if it's can get on the complicated side of complex. Can't vouch for the quality of the latter but lotsa peeps seem to like it. Should be simpler anyhow.

They aren't open systems obviously so you would need to definitely not allergic to "counts as".

What about Mutants and Death Ray Guns? It's got the campaign aspect, plus random character generation as an option.

It's notionally a post-apocalyptic game, but it can cover pretty much any sort of sci-fi. To ditch the post-apocalyptic aspect, all you need do is drop the rules for weapon/armour malfunction (which are meant to suggest ill-maintained gear).

It's essentially the sci-fi version of Song of Blades and Heroes, with the necessary detail added (i.e. weapons and armour types are much more distinguished from each other).

The new cyberpunk game from Osprey 'Realitys Edge' is a campaign game for small teams. Although the cyberpunk theme is quite strong so depends on how you feel about that!

Legends of the Old West, just change the weapon names?
Six shooter becomes 'slug thrower' or laser pistol (depending on the level of tech you want'
Heavy pistol becomes 'blaster'
Shotgun becomes 'particle disruptor', etc
Probably ought to change the 'character type' names too - but space bandits could work straight off, same with space law enforcement etc.

Given things like Serenity/Firefly are basically just western's IN SPACCCEEEE it should work pretty well. Not much scope for alien species (everything has about human stats) but again, depending on how you view your sci-fi setting that may not matter?

I'd give Galactic Heroes a try - it ticks all the things you mention.

It also has the benefit of being part of the 'Fistful of' series of rules which mean if you like it you can use the same basic rules for lots of other periods.

Maybe Void Pirates? Excellent rules set for cool cinematic games.

+1 for Galactic Heroes. Deadzone is also very good and comes with a campaign system.

A lot of votes for Galactic Heroes so think I'll give it a try first. I particularly like how it's very faction/miniature generic so I can use any minis I like and make up my own faction. Thanks for the feedback everyone.
