The Late 16th Century Irish Military Revolution
« on: September 16, 2019, 12:59:21 PM »
Over the years I've been collecting images and information on the Nine Years War in Ireland.  Following the failure of the Desmond Rebellion the Irish Lords realised that they needed a new military system.  I've written a post on my blog on the system they adopted which I hope will be of use to anyone interested in the period.  There will be subsequent posts on the English Army in Ireland, the Tyrone's Irish Army and the Battle of Clontibret in 1596 where the new system was first used.

Here's the link if this sounds of interest.

Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it.

If you do add some Flags I'll certainly buy them.

Interesting article.

I’m collecting an earlier (Kern/ Horse / Gallowglass) Irish force in 10mm, inspired by the irregular wars rules, which extend out to the period you write about, and certainly allow the Irish to have pike and shot units, but it is great to have a better understanding of this transition.

Irish are always interesting.
It is said of them that, 'All their wars were happy & all their songs were sad'.
I too would be interested in any Irish flags.

Thanks Fred I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Chesterton. There are some Irish flags already available.  I think you might find them on a link at Stuart's Army Royal blog and I've seen them on ebay.  It would be good to have some more.

I'm in the middle of painting up an Irish force for the very same rules, but using Khurasan's 15mm range - lovely figures to paint. I also have Spanish, English and Imperialists on the go; hoping to get them all done before the Muscovites and Swedes come out as the Livonian War will be a good one to do too. The rules are really versatile, like them a lot.

The Khurasan figures are excellent for both sides.  My English are all Essex Miniatures which are pretty good but if you want Irish Pike and Shot it has to be Khurasan in my opinion.

That looks like a flag from Pete's Flags on your figures above?

I have Irish and English sheets from the same range for my figures, once I afix them, and some generic Spanish Renaissance - look like lovely flags flat, how have you found using them?

Yes, it's one of Pete's and they are lovely flags.  I've still got three to use.  The paper is a bit thicker than I normally use but that's not a problem and as you can see they hold the shape well once they have been PVA'd and put on the flag pole.  I might scan the remaining ones and make them a little bigger.

All my English are Essex and come with cast on flags so I painted those.

If you haven't already got it, keep an eye out for a book called A History of Irish Flags from Earliest Times by G A Hayes-McCoy.  Particularly good for the Renaissance and 1798 periods, amongst others.
No plan survives first contact with the dice.

Thanks Baron, I had a look online some pretty eye watering prices for that book now.

While I was doing so I came across a review from 1938 of GA Hayes McCoy's Scots Mercenary Forces in Ireland.  The reviewer while recognising the contribution to scholarship Hayes McCoy had made observed that he wasn't at home using Irish language sources. I had always assumed he had fluent Irish so thanks to your comment I learned something new.
