Fun with Cry Havoc Scenarios
« on: September 30, 2019, 03:45:51 PM »
Yesterday Doug and I got together for a little medieval skirmish gaming. We had both been big fans of Cry Havoc (a medieval skirmish board game by Standard Games & Publications) when it had first came out..probably about 30 years ago. Cry Havoc had some great scenario ideas, which were so much more fun than the line-up and advance to contact games that so often get played when time is short. We therefore decided that it would be a lot of fun to take the Cry Havoc scenarios and adapt the for medieval skirmish gaming.

The Knight Errant scenario takes place in a village that has been terrorized by a company of marauding mercenary soldiers who have been threatening the villagers with dire punishment if they do not pay with both money and 'in kind'.

A goodly wandering knight, Sir Richard had heard of the villager’s plight and has encouraged the villagers to stand up to the bullies. The mercenaries have decided to teach the villagers a lesson.

We played the game out using a play test version of Feudal Patrol, Buck Surdus upcoming rule system for Ancient, Dark Age, Medieval and Fantasy.

I've added a full write up with loads more photos to my hobby blog @ http://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/Hobby-Pages/Hobby-Blog/Feudal-Patrol?fbclid=IwAR0gBeUSscxIKqbolIO9A0OjiZ3bnmhVGGwxsmb7t8BR9oVEuwzE-6mp8Zs

I also have fond memories of Cry Havoc,
and their Samurai version. The boards were very nice,
and often could be matched up to make a larger playing area.

Great stuff! I have fond memories of Outremer, which I think was by the same company? It also had a great campaign system.

Ah God, yes, I used to love Cry Havoc. I’m afraid to say it was probably nearer 40 years ago though  ::)
I’ve still got Samurai Blades, but must have divested myself of the original Cry Havoc at some point in the dim and distant past. Brilliant little game, and some lovely characters and scenarios  :)

Are the Cry Havoc scenarios available anyplace?  I am doing some Medieval skirmish gaming with Fistful of Lead. Scenarios would be very helpful.

Smirnoff, thanks, but it seems to be formatted for Microsoft Office, which I do not have.

I think the scenario books etc are Word documents, but you can open them up with pretty much any word processor like Libra Office for example.

They are pdfs Nick, download a reader and you are sorted. I tried to attached the pdf but it's too big for the forum limits (4000k)

I sold off Cry Havoc, Siege, Viking Raiders, and Outremer years ago - but I kept the two scenario books for exactly this reason - there are some really neat ideas in there and they play well with any skirmish rules for Medievals (Song of Blades or En Garde would work just great, I suspect)

Happy memories of an opponent I suckered into shooting his own most powerful knight in the back with a crossbow! That apart, however, the combat system was a disaster in those games; a peasant with a pointed stick had at least twice the chance of wounding an attacking knight that the knight had of wounding him!

The laws of probability do not apply to my dice in wargames or to my finesses in bridge.

In fact the additional scenarios are from this page.

http://www.cryhavocfan.org/eng/suite/booklets/chbooklet.htm

These are RTF - Rich Text Files so should open in any word processor.
