Question about Hannibal & his enemies
« on: October 03, 2019, 08:00:11 PM »
Right with the imminent release of Saga Age of Hannibal, could the brains of the Ancients board please fill me in on his enemies?
I know absolutely nothing about the period (except that he took some elephants over the Alps, to attack the Romans?)

Thank you  :D

As a young commander, he conquered territory in Iberia (now Spain) and added it to the Carthaginian empire. There are rumours he also served in Seleucia (now Iraq) after the 2nd Punic War (when he crossed the Alps) as a military advisor.
'Sir John ejaculated explosively, sitting up in his chair.' ... 'The Black Gang'.

Spanish, Gauls, Romans, Other Italians, Numideans. Then after the 2nd Punic War
Rome pursued him around the Mediterranean. During that time he earned
his living acting as an adviser. Many stories, the two I like best are:-
1) Advising a (smaller) fleet, he ordered them to collect snakes, put them
into clay pots & when the enemy came close, catapult them over. The
enemy were so busy trying to not get bitten, they got into an awful mess.
Became easy meat for his side.
2) One king, who would not let Hannibal 'play' with HIS army, proudly
showed it off to Hannibal. 'What do you think of it?' he asked the great
general,  'It will be enough for the Romans, no matter how greedy they are'
Needless to say, the army lost.

Late Republican.

Mid Republic, perhaps? Late Republican it is commonly considered from the time of the Graccii to the victory of Octavius over Mark Antony.

It would be what DBA classifies as "Polybian Roman." That is to say the army as described by Polybius, with the manipular structure of hastati, principes and triarii, supported by velites light infantry and equites cavalry. If you look for those names while searching for figures you probably won't go far wrong, and there is quite a bit of info on them on the net if you're not looking to invest in a bunch of books.

I would agree most people would call that "mid republic" rather than late.

That would be one of Hannibal’s beasts lured into an ambush by some Romans.. the ones in the picture are technically not Romans but other latin allies of rome armed in similar fashion to roman troops..

the guys defending the elephant are iberian allies of Hannibal..

He had many what I call small time foes - Iberians fought him, Celts fought him, Numidians gone rogue fought him..

But his main enemy as mentioned will be Rome. I'd like to also consider it "Middle Republic" as previously mentioned.
Early republic had hastati using the short spear and other troops, but with hannibals coming you see things like velites, more short sword work, and more mercenaries running around the punic wars world.  Late Republic I look at starting around Marius reforms, when the legionnaires show up and the maniple system is done with. Far after Hannibal's time, when his name is uttered as a boogey man. ;)
