Ornate Window/Door surrounds for 28mm
« on: October 13, 2019, 08:27:51 PM »
Hi Chaps.

For some time I have been searching for the ornate stonework that often surrounds windows and doors in Eastern Europe and Victorian England to no avail. I have tried all the main mdf sites...

It is looking more likely that I will have to resort to making my own mould but first I will need a 3d printout, Do any such things exist as a download?

As you can guess I know nothing about this-or the moulding/casting process but I will be making my own buildings come what may. I have been rather inspired by some threads on here and got a lot of help from the Tin shed chap re artillery pieces so I know that this can be done. It would be a lot easier if someone has trodden this path before me though!

Any advice would be most welcome. I do intend to have some architectural pieces for scratch building ready before Christmas.

Thanks in advance

Try sites like Fenris Games, Dolls house companies, War-bases, Empress Miniatures,
Irregular et al.
Also try asking companies (the above & the likes of Sally 4th , Charlie Fox-Trot & Sarrissa)
to see if they are planning to/willing to make anything like that.

If no joy with that:
a) Carve or Milliput/Green Stuff a 'master' which you can emboss into a layer of Das etc.
b)  Make a master & buy some of that mould stuff that becomes soft when put into hot water,
then you can churn out what you want.

I reckon that you should give OSHIROmodels a shout, they may be on their 'to-do' list....

Thanks for the tips Guys. I think that you are all giving sound advice and in fact I will try the sculpting/moulding and contacting companies direct. In the mean time Shifting Lands will be getting some attention from myself-excellent site that I have never heard of, thank you.

Shifting sands is one of those Best Websites You've Never Heard Of places...

If I were you and I wanted more than a dozen or so items I would carve/sculpt what I want from wood/styrene/putty and then make a simple one piece rubber mold and cast to my hearts content. Resin casting with open/one piece molds is something anyone can do in their shed with a little knowledge and very minimum equipment - its quite rewarding too. There are plenty of How To videos on youtube.

Having read that Brandlin I think I am going to give it a go. I am off work in a week and may just order the mould making liquid. I will need lots of windows and door surrounds.

Thanks for the tip I will be going for it.

If you want to try even easier and cheaper... then look up "blue stuff" or "oyumaru". Its a rubbery plastic that you can make simple molds out of simply by heating it in hot water and letting it cool.

Again plenty of you tube videos and so on :-)

Let us know how you get on

You might be able to make something from Fenris Games ornate cornices and mouldings.

Google O scale model railway products. The are roughly 1/43, which is mostly very useful for 28mm wargaming  terrain. I have , for example, gotten parts from https://www.tichytraingroup.com[/u]]https://www.tichytraingroup.com in the past.

Thanks Hammers, I will look now. Its strange that the mdf manufacturers don't produce much in this sort of line?
