Definitely a simple but fun game (with enough depth to enjoy it!).  The game-tinkerer in me also realizes I could easily re-make all of the components necessary, and there are so many quality plastic kits out there, that scooping an original wouldn't be necessary.  Then I started thinking about expanding units/rules, etc...I should quit while I'm ahead!  I have an 11 year old nephew but he's not much for wargaming...so I better use that as an excuse NOT to start a project like this.

The first unit is complete, had a lot of fun painting it and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

I'm thinking that I will update the army unit name and stats on the back though. That original sticker is pretty terrible and after seeing Pil's work on his Battle Masters thread, I'm inspired.

Next week will be some Chaos warriors I think... or those goblin wolf riders...

That'S some nice old-school painting right there. They would fit right on the box of the game :)

Very cool and marvellous paint job! I also like your basing solution, a bit of the best of both worlds. I'm looking forward to the next installments . :)

Quite a cheerful paint job! And those split colour feather plumes are not a common sight on figures.

I've got a copy of this game that I'm slowly painting up as well.  This is inspiring.

I've come across other games with similar pieces like LionHeart and I wonder how well they paint up in skilled hands like yours.

Other such games I've looked at are Dark World, HeroQuest, DragonStrike. but they're all getting pricey.

Any other games I should take a look at?  I find I am quite fond of the old school models.

Legend of Zagor is another one. I believe the fameplay is a bit boring but the miniatures are nice. I don't have it myself though so it's hearsay and photographs ;)

I have some Dark World and Hero Quest miniatures too... Maybe I'll paint some as heroes for Kings of War...

In the mean time, check out this unit of Chaos Warriors. These figures are also going to play the role of 'Soul Reaver infantry'  - i.e. Vampire warriors - for my Kings of War army. I have been looking for good models for the vampires for about ten years, and all the while they were sitting under my nose!

Do I sense a bit of a Halloween theme on those shields?

I did dig out my half-finished Imperial knights during the weekend, but did not manage to make much progress - seems like my usual technique of applying black washes over armour does not yield the desired results on these figures.

It is indeed Halloween themed! Those are jack-o-lantern shield designs, even though they were forced onto those long Chaos shields. Part of the reason is that  I just enjoy painting Halloween themes, and part of it is that they will be doing double duty as Vampire infantry in my Halloween-themed fantasy rank-and-file army for Kings of War or OldHammer. Check out the Halloween-themed undead army gallery here for context:

Looking forward to seeing your figures come together! I am working on some Chaos Knights/Champions currently and I have two done: one with purple armour like the warriors above, and one with steel. I wasn't too happy with the steel armour either to be honest. Both of them were test figs, and I'm finishing off the third (and fourth) right now.

Thanks

That's a whole lot of pumpkin you have got there - compared to those the chaos warrior shields look quite subtle! Are you going to continue the theme on the mounted chaos knights, or will they get a different style?

As for the Imperial knights, I am getting a feeling that drybrushing steel straight over black undercoat might be a better method than applying black washes over steel, but it is too late for me to change now. That said, I still have those lord knights waiting somewhere unpainted...

Yeah, the Chaos Champion knights will be sporting a similar theme. They will also be in the Undead army as mounted vampires cavaly called Soul Reavers or something.

Interesting about the steel. For mine I use pure highlighting, starting from a black metallic paint all the way up to a shining silver. It looks okay, but it's tough to blend...

Thanks

Nice take on the chaos warriors and I remember the Halloween undead from before. They will make fine vampire knights.

Thread necromancy!

I finished a few more figures for Battlemasters... will I ever finish? Unlikely. But I'm okay with that. I have a few half-painted goblins and a primed ogre ready to go, but it's unlikely it will see paint in the near future. Still, I'm happy with these figs; they were a lot of work.
