Commitment 2020 - not a resolution
« on: January 01, 2020, 07:58:26 PM »
Resolutions are made - generally - to be broken.

So, instead, I am making a public commitment to myself:

Paint a minimum of one unit of figures per month, or a major building painting (like an entire legation for Boxer Rebellion).  Unit to be a minimum of 12 and preferably 18 figures, more is okay but still counts as a single unit.

Stretch goal is to paint one unit per week (or major structure project - which can include terrain) until reaching 48 units.  The reason for 48 is the first and last week of the year are partial weeks and need to allow for vacations away from hobby time.

Will major failure to fulfill this lead to my commitment by the end of the year?  Only time will tell.

So, what hobby commitment are you making to yourself for 2020?

For me commitments aren’t much different to resolutions. I would like to make either but I know real life will get in the way so I can only go with a wish list for 2020 (all in 28mm):-

Expand my AWI Americans
Paint a gameable number of woodland Indians
Paint a gameable number of SYW Russians

I’ve decided that I need more discipline in my painting schedule. Stopping the show games has led to a wildly ‘dancing butterfly with the shakes’ approach in the past year and that must stop. I’ve had 5 projects on the painting table over Christmas, none of them making progress, and there’s quite a lot more in the cellar.

Monthly targets are the way forward. So this month I will be painting Victorian civilians and Capetian knights. And I will do a little bit each day.  Hopefully the selection of a different target each month will satisfy the butterfly of chaos while allowing the snail of progress to fill the Really Useful Box of Holding.

And so far it’s working out fine  :)

I had a resolution a while ago to buy no new figures until I'd completed what I had. It hasn't quite worked out but has definitely kept the number of new projects down and kept me from amassing overwhelming anounts in the pile.

That said, considering offloading some which are awaiting painting just to feel less pressured to get it all done. I'll never be able to make targets, but restricting the number of on-the-go projects has definitely contributed to getting things finished.

So, once again my commitment is no new figure purchases until the following completed:
- C16th project (1 and a half units left to paint)
- 10mm Fantasy (too many!)
- 18mm WSS Catalonians either painted or offloaded
- 18mm Fantasy painted or offloaded
- Rome (2) and C16th (2) buildings constructed & painted.

Keeping to no more than 5 projects in the list, and only 1 on the painting table, has really worked well.

(NB. This doesn't stop me from thinking about future projects!  lol

Terrain buying, unless it's really specific like Rome I'm trying to keep to generic terrain and match projects/scales etc. to what I have.

My commitment for 2020, is to keep enjoying this great hobby.
If it isn’t fun, I’ll pick another period and get all fired up about that one.
I’ll keep playing with my mates, and having a laugh.
If the dice don’t fall right, who cares ?
Don’t put yourself under any pressure to finish this or that. Just do what you can, when you can, and if you can’t, don’t get too bothered about it.
After all, it’s just a hobby.

I’m continuing what I started last year. Spend no real money on wargaming.
Want something new, then have to sell something.
Helps having nearly 50 years of hoarding wargames stuff.

I am committed to continuing my AP2018 AP2019 AP2020 Sudan painting project going with random dashes of other figures for fun.  A unit a month would be highly unlikely given other commitments and actual gaming.

This is exactly what I keep trying to tell myself! Never seems to work though  lol

I have several CoC Platoons in the lead painting pile, but this year I want to finish at a minimum, platoons plus supports for Malaya, (Japanese & UK), then Italians & US for Sicily, plus suitable terrain for both.

Stretch goals are both sides for the 1745 from the Flags of War Kickstarter, and finishing up my AWI for Sharp Practice. I am also expecting 15mm Vikings (and Late Romans) from the War & Empire Kickstarter, so they are my ultimate stretch goal.

And 2021 will be the year of the Airborne, as i have US, UK and German in the stash.

Enjoy the hobby
Play more games
Paint some models

Not buy ANY until my current leadpile is painted
Not buy the Sisters of Battle boxed set because I feel betrayed and bitter towards Games Workshop and that's not a positive mindset - but I still don't have to buy their stuff...(yes this is redundant if I stick to the one above but...)
