I had a memory of some Gripping Beast miniatures in armor that was a very close match for the reference images you posted. Went looking on the site and couldn't find them at first, but sure enough they do still sell them:

Apart from the Woodbine 'Eastern WWI range I think the Early Saxon range was one of Soapy's finest.
