Mod Podge?
« on: November 02, 2019, 08:26:51 PM »
I've seen this stuff used (and suggested) in countless videos and blog/forum posts. So I took the plunge and ordered a bottle on Amazon (can't find it in stores, here). And... it looks 100% pva glue to me. What property of this stuff should make me order another once I've finished this bottle instead of using any other brands pva?

I have asked the resident expert (my wife who loves crafting) and apparently it's more flexible, longer lasting and more waterproof than normal PVA.

A much closer equivalent would be Acrylic Matte Medium but it tends to be more expensive than the Modge Podge, at least hereabouts.

My understanding is that Mod Podge is a proprietary mix of PVA, acrylic medium and varnish.

One of the ways I think pure PVA and Mod Podge differ is when you thin them with water. Thinned PVA (with water or alcohol) is often used for flocks and sealing things like ballast to model railways. I don't think Mod Podge is as good for this - I have found it separates when you add a lot of water and behaves differently to PVA.

I have made my own by adding 10-15% varnish to 85-90%PVA and for my purposes I couldn't tell the difference. The varnish certainly makes it water resistant* and tougher.

*note water resistant is not water proof.

I was just Googling it real quick for "professional" differences. LOL
But seriously, Google it for the crafting folks who use it more than us gamers.
That way you can get a real good understanding of what the differences are.
