Really interesting read and I'd be interested to see a copy of the rules when you're done with them! That Friday book along with Conlan's 'State of War'' are big reasons why this period through the Nanboku-chō is my favourite period of Japanese history.I started work on a set of small-scale skirmish rules for the Heian period years ago, based mostly on Mordheim but I wanted a mounted archery system similar to what you describe here - didn't get too far because none of my gaming buddies had any interest in the period, and at the time there weren't a lot of suitable minis available either.
