Author Topic: [Galactic Heroes] Painting for a "ready to play" multiplayer game  (Read 2430 times)

This is kinda of an ongoing side project. It is also at a halt, at the moment, as I'm going to start a RoSD campaign and a Warmahordes "Oblivion" campaign in the very next weeks, so I'm busy painting stuff for those games. Nonetheless it's some time I'd like to discuss this project here.

The project: choose a ruleset and paint enough models for several teams for various races/factions. The goal is to have a game ready to play for multiple players, for when at a game night shows up an odd number of people, or a game ends early.

As for rulesets I'm currently deciding between FoL Galactic Heroes and OPR Grimdark Future Firefight. Either case, I will use FoL card driven activation to handle multiple players. Once I have picked a ruleset I will create teams/squads, decide on stats for the models, then I will create reference cards for them, to make the whole thing easier to pick up and play.

Now, on the models.

The first I made are the Space Orks. I originally painted these to sell them on eBay, a few years ago. Nobody wanted them, despise multiple price drops. So I kept them and now I'm happy I did, as the whole project idea sparked also thanks to having them sitting around.

Mantic one was added later, and it's a bit out of place, but it's a project I decided to do on a budget, so I have to make compromises.

All Orks are painted in a simple scheme: a few shades of grey, green for the skin, and one accent color (blue for the boyz, red for the nobz, yellow for specialists).
Not very fond of the grass green skin of most of them, but I'm a bit reluctant about touching up them now, Iěm afraid to do more harm than good.

The "Wulfen" Mercenary is a Tehnolog toy soldier I modified to suit a sci-fi setting and quickly painted in a simple scheme. Quick and simple will be a constant in this project :D

Then, there are the obligatory Space Marines:

These are mostly Ultramarines (or successor chapter: the one with white/blue split armor is a Marine Errant), but I did not restricted myself to paint everything same chapter for two reasons: avoid getting bored, and avoid cleaning chapter insignia when I eventually find cheap models with sculpted chapter symbols, like on the Dark Angels biker. I already said this project has to be produced simple and cheap, yes?
For the same reason, I included non-GW models (HERESY!).
Also, models are way less shiny than it seems in these pics.

I've recently added a couple more. A Blood Angel form Death Company and a Salamander (because flamer).

Then, there are the space bugs: Tyranids!

I've decided on a paint scheme derived from the classi Genestealers from Space Hulk.

Thanks!

Yes, I'm leaning toward FoL myself. I have evaluated various rulesets for the task, including a couple based on Goalsystem, and they look quite good, too. But I think GH has almost everything I'm looking for: simplicity, native support for multiple palyers on the same table (while you can plug its card-driven activation mechanic right in almost every alternated activation game, most cards abilities aren't directly portable), freedom to build profiles for any model you like. The only gripe I have with Galactic Heroes it's the somewhat limited choices in Team composition. But since I'm going to play narrative games only, I think I could tamper with warband building rules, If I will feel the need to :)

Finally, the (not)Squats. Yeah, I know, a couple are technically space halflings, but I just don't care. They're short, they fit the team well enough to me, especially once painted in matching colors, and I had them readily available.

Again, models are way less glossy than it seems from these pics (I have to experiment with lighting).

Well, that's it, regarding what I have painted until now.

What a great collection you've started.

Good choice of ruleset too!

To be honest, there’s no reason why you couldn’t play around with the team composition to fit your game narrative; adding or removing traits as and when.

Great stuff - and nice to see that Kryomek. He (she? it?) really fits in well with the genestealers - as does the Reaper beastie.

Thanks everyone for commenting :)
I'm back on this project. Time to stat these models., and I'll ask for opinions and suggestions.
Let's start with Orks

Space Orks
Crew trait: Bloodthirsty or Ferocious
Both feel appropriate. What do you think?

Orc Nob' - Leader
Traits:
Leader
Brawler
Determined
Encouraging
(Unstoppable)
I have to discard one. I think I'll leave Unstoppable out, albeit it's very thematic.
Don't like Encouraging name, but the effect is quite thematic (imagine the Nob' threatening other Orks, instead of encourage them).

Weapons:
Submachine-Gun, 12/24” Burst
Chain Axe, Deadly

Ork Mek' - Specialist
Traits:
Gadgeteer
(Cunning)
Deft
Again, one trait too much. Deft is nice as it compensate Ammo Hog.
I think I'll leave Cunning out, albeit I find it quite thematic.
Or... I could give it a negative trait like Coward or Sissy and keep all three. But since it's a model geared to ranged combat, it feels like cheating.

Weapons:
Heavy Laser, AP 2, Ammo Hog, Burst, Team, Specialist

Ork Rokkit Boy - Regular
Trait: Flier
Weapons:
Auto Pistol, 6/12“
Close Combat Weapon

Ork Dakka Boy - Regular
Trait: Eagle Eyed
I'd pick Eagle Eyed to compensate the very limited range of Auto Rifle.
Weapons:
Auto Rifle, 6/12“ Burst

Ork Boy - Regular
Trait: Determined? Swordsman?
Don't know what trait to give to this chap. Both feel appropriate.
There is not a trait that allows for a specialist weapon, to give this guy a Roket Launcher?

Weapons:
Auto Pistol, 6/12“
Close Combat Weapon

Lastly, I was thinking on creating an option for this crew: swap any Regular for three Snotlings (grunts), with Small.
But how this works? Small gives -1 wounds, and Grunts have just 1.

The squad building is just a suggestion. You can give your Rokkit Boy a rocket launcher, just balance the other teams appropriately. Its not a competitive play game.
Make the snotlings a grunt group. Keep small so they get the -1 to be hit but give them a positive trait to balance.

Thanks for reply!

My bad, I cut'n'pasted profiles, leaving "Rokkit Boy" as the name of the third Regular, too. This was unintended.
I was thinking to give the Rocket Launcher (or another Specialist weapon) to a different Regular.

The one in the middle is the Rokkit Boy, and I'm fine as I managed to stat him.
I thought about using one of those on either sides as a Regular but arming him with a heavy weapon, basically "trading" its Trait with the use of a Specialist weapon.
i.e. as if a skill such "Armory Specialist: you can use a Specialist weapon" would exist.

I think you mean to give them a negative trait, am I correct?

My bad. I consider small as a negative but it’s not. Just give a regular a specialist weapon instead of another trait or There’s also crew traits that give you more specialists.

Made a card using the template available in the rulebook.
I think I'll want to add number of wounds and more space for Traits text.
