AMBUSH!
« on: July 09, 2009, 04:12:49 PM »
i orinally posted this to TMP sci fi boards, and thought maybe i might post it here as well.

the first part is little story about what happened during a solo game of CR3.0 when some  lurking marauders popped an ambush on an unsuspecting PLANETARY MILITIA convoy conducting a route recon of an areas they were unfamiliar with.  i have had this habit sinc ye daze of COLONIAL SKIRMISH rules of naming my soldiers and other toys that are used in various games i play. the name is painted on the backside of the base for handy reference.  the names used are the names of the toys involved in the fight that survived.  now, being braindead, i had never gotten around to naming the marauding ROAD WARRIORS, so they are nameless in this report.  i am happy to report that NOW they all have names.

this skirmish took place during my CARTUH HAVEN solo minicampaign, which is set on a human settled world that has  recently been brought to its knees by off world attackers (who are unknown at this time-no one has survived contact with them). so i have all of the early stages of a PA world to ramble about in  and use just about any toys that i own to play with.  i game in 28mm scale.

the story is soley from the perspective of the three PM  soldiers who survived the ambush; the marauder side is completely disregard because this was MIMIME vs the THWG reaction system. actionand reaction is flid, constantly on-going, not IGO-UGO, and  the troopers often develope "minds of their own" during a mission (just like real life soldiers do), according to WTF is happening to and around them, so it is best to think on your feet as a player, and remember that as far as the toys are concerned, this is "real" and not a game on a table top.

below the story are the orders of battle for both combatants.

FOREWARD

this is the latest in a series of skirmishes i have been playing set on a distant human settled planet that comes under attack from off world. this attack effective KO's government, law and order at all levels, destroys huge amounts of infrastucture, killing 100,000s, wounding 100,000s more, and leaving the survivors facing a very uncertain future and an unknown off world enemy.

 THE STORY

THE patrol was rolling along the deserted rural road one minute, and then
catapulted into a maestrom of destruction, confusion, wounds and death the next.
the transition happened literally in the blink of an eye when the unseen man
hiding in the treeline armed and blew the three command detonated mines hidden
 alongside the roadway. . .

SMOKE never even heard the series of tremendous explosions that ripped through
the patrol. one minute he was sweating inside the LAV dismount compartment, and
the next he was laying in a jumble of bodies, loose gear, and weapons on the
floor. there was an ominous red flickering light, dark clouds of smoke, the
smell of something (someone?) burning nearby. . . SMOKE knew without a doubt
that if he did not move, now, he would die inside the LAV, but he still did not
 know what had happened.

SMOKE crawled over an unseen thrashing body, moving toward the personnel
hatch at the rear of the compartment, and percieved safety. at first the hatch
resisted his efforts to open it, but then it opened out and downwards
grudgingly, allowing him to wiggle through the gap.

OUTSIDE it was a silent scene from hell; the light truck travelling behind the
LAV was buried nose deep in the drainage ditch that ran alongside the road,
smoking; he did not see anyone moving in or around the wreck. the LAV he had
been riding in was tossed onto its right side, somewhat worse for wear, with
smoke rolling out of the open personnel hatch. dust devils danced around
SMOKE, bright lights streaked overhead, and sparked off the LAV's hull.

 CRAP! those are bullets! AMBUSH!

SMOKE low crawled toward the drianage ditch wishing he was a hotshot power
armored trooper instead of a lowly grunt. rounds continued to silently impact
all around him, as well as streaking overhead as he crawled to, then rolled
into the ditch with a silent THUD! that left him breathless and immobile,
watching the light show overhead. how long he just lay there, SMOKE never knew.
he was just _there_ until somebody (somebodies?) tumbled in ontop of him.

THEN FARR's long, homely face was shoved into his; the ex-vaquero's mouth was
moving and his big green eyes were wild: am i deaf SMOKE wondered. am i hit?
 is he saying?

another body tumbled into the ditch, head first, and landed on SMOKE and FARR.
the unknown bod scrambled away and hunkered down against the wall of the ditch
as the soldiers tried to sit up. this was the big blonde SAW gunner known to one
and all as SANDUSKY HUSKY for her muscular build. she was screaming something at
them he could not hear. then she dropped to her hands and knees, began crawling
along the ditch. since SANDUSKY HUSKY seemed to know O, SMOKE, began crawling
after her, prompted by FARR, who kept shoving him in the butt with his helmeted
head. if he was not careful, he was gonna have FARR's head up _his_ ass . . .
 SMOKE crawled faster!

the ambushers seemed to have misplaced the trio of squaddies in the confusion of
the firefight. they were left alone as they crawled about 50 meters, entered a
concrete pipe, and crawled another 50 or so meters before coming to a T-shaped
intersection. they turned into the intersection and followed another length of
concrete pipe for an unknown distance, then came to another open air drainage
ditch. SMOKE looked up to see if anyone was shooting in their direction. nothing
but blue skies and white clouds overhead. good!

the squaddies huddled together in this new section of ditch. SANDUSKY HUSKY and
FARR would occasionally peep over the edge at something to their right. SMOKE
elected to keep his own head below ground level. FARR and the SANDUSKY HUSKY
appeared to be having an animated discussion that SMOKE could not hear a word
of. O? he shrugged. they would give him THE WORD when he needed to know.

taking stock, SMOKE was surprised to find that he was bleeding from the ears,
could not hear anything, and was developing the mother of all headaches.
 physically he was golden, but, his helmet was gone, so was his primary weapon;
he still had his pistol, ammo up the ole wazzoo, a combat knife, and 4 frag
grenades. SANDUSKY HUSKY seemed to be unhurt and fully equipped with SAW,
pistol, combat knife, grenades. FARR, too, appeared to be unhurt, fully armed
 and equipped.

feeling brave, SMOKE cautiously looked over the rim of the ditch and would have
browned his pants if they had not already been browned. all of the patrol
vehicles were wrecked and burning; a number of civvie clad men/women were moving
about in the KZ searching bodies for intel, collecting weapons/ammo, dispatching
any wounded MILITIA with single shots or short burst of fire. apparently the
trio were the only survivors of the ambushed patrol.

SANDUSKY HUSKY slapped a big hand onto SMOKE's shoulder; she mouthed something,
and pointed further along the ditch, then without waiting began crawling away as
fas as she could. SMOKE followed her like MARY's little lamb, and FARR was right
on his ass all the way to where every the SANDUSKY HUSKY was taking them . . . .

THIS action developed as a result of an encounter between a band of maruders
and an unsuspecting PLANETARY MILITIA patrol scouting out some of the new (to
both groups) territory about 100 klicks west of CARUTH HAVEN. the militia
failed to detect the lurking marauders from the band known as THE ROAD WARRIORS,
and rolled right into a nasty ambush.

TRUE the ROAD WARRIORs ambush had not been specifically prepared for the
MILITIA, but, was addressed TO WHOMEVER IT MAY CONCERN; it worked very well none
the less. command detonated mines went BOOM! and bullets flew as planned.

MILITIA PATROL (VERY LOW STATE OF AWARENESS)

light trucks, wheeled, ATV, soft skinned, x 3 each. first truck in the patrol
has a vehicle mounted auto grenade launcher, the last truck a mounted HMG.
limited ammo for both of these weapons, so when ammo outage happens they are
"dry". the truck between the LAV and the lead gun truck does not mount any
 weapons.

LAV, same as LAV discussed in earlier scenario info. maingun and coaxial HMG
both have limted ammo, so again when an outage happens, consider them both "dry"
 as well.

PATROL LEADER (GRUNT), NCO, REP-3; standard militia arms and equipment SHE is
riding in the second light truck.

ASSISTANT PATROL LEADER (GRUNT), NCO, REP-4; same as NCO above , but riding in
 the LAV.

JUNIOR NCO (GRUNT), REP-3, same as NCO above, but has a combat shotgun instead
of an assault rifle. riding in the tail end light truck.

OTHER RANKS MILITIA TROOPERS (GRUNTS) X 6 ea. crewing the light trucks. standard
squaddie weaponry/equipment; two can replace assault rifles with SAWs.

OTHER RANKS MILITIA TROOPERS (GRUNTS) X 8 ea. this group includes the LAV crew
of 3 bods, and 5 dismounts. standard trooper weaponry/equipment, except 1
 squaddie has a SAW.

THE ROAD WARRIORS (VERY HIGH STATE OF AWARENESS).

assorted, soft skinned, civvie wheeled vehicles (ATVs and non ATVs) with a
preponderence of light trucks x 8 ea. none of these vehicles mount any weaponry.
all of these vehicles are concealed below LOS from the roadway by a depression
in the prairie, to the east of the roadway. there are 2 vehicle guards (both
REP-2s, mobile but recovering from injuries) remaining with the wheels: everyone
 else deployed for the ambush.

GANGER BOSS (GRUNT), REP-4, police patrol armor, dirty civvies, pistol, SMG, a
non powered CQQ weapon of some sort.

GANGER ASST BOSS (GRUNT), REP-4, police patrol armor, dirty civvies, pistol,
assault rifle w/grenade launcher (no grenades!), non powered CQC weapon.

GANGER ASST BOSS (GRUNT/EX-,POLICE), REP-4, police patrol armor, partial or
complete, dirty police uniform, pistol, police trank-shooter, sawn off
 shotgun, shock baton.

 GANGERS (GRUNTS/ EX-POLICE & EX-MILITARY), REP-4s, X 8 ea; ex-police have patrol
armor w/ partial or complete, dirty police uniforms, soldiers have light body
armor, w/partial or complete dirty uniforms. all ex-police and soldiers have a
pistol and a non-powered CQC weapon. ex-police have an assortment of SL rifles,
SL carbines, SL riotguns for primary weaponry. ex-soldiers all have assault
rifle, and 1 may have a SAW or assault rifle w/ grenade launcher, or a
singleshot, disposable, ATM launcher in addition to the assault rifle.

GANGERS (GRUNTS), REPS-3 x 10 ea, no armor at all, dirty civvies/possible
dirty prison uniforms, randomly determined firearms and non-powered CQC
 weaponry.

GANGER (GRUNTS), REP-2 x 2 ea, vehicle guards! low reps due to being in the
process of recovering from previous serious injuries; they are mobile, able to
get around on foot, however. no armor at all. dirty civvies, randomly determined
firearms and a non-powered CQC weapon ea.

COMMAND DETONATED MINE x 3 ea. made with civvie grade explosives, detonated
by a hand held wireless detonator; placed anywhere along roadway within LOS of
treeline. this is a daisy-chain rig (fire one, fire all). can only be detonated
when the GANGERS are active, or reactive. blast template is 3" per mine,
IMPACT=3, tabletop range for execution of command detonation.

PATROL is ordered to conduct a route recon along this rural roadway from one
table edge to the opposite table edge. deadly force is authorized against armed
hostiles, but injury to innocent civilians must be avoided if at all possible.
convoy automatically activate_first_on turn one, then follow normal procedure.
convoy is moving at 8" per activation and cannot speed up until after the ambush
 is sprung.

ROAD WARRIORS have been tipped off that there is a _small_ government aide
convoy entering this area by informants (info is wrong). said convoy is expected
to move along this roadway with a military escort. gangers must prevent this
convoy from exiting the table top, drive away or kill all convoy escorts and
then loot the convoy of its valuble goodies before retreating off table to their
 temperary operating base.

terrain is (deceptive!) rolling prairie, with tall grasses, scattered trees,
clumps of vegetation,, with a two lane paved roadway, centered and running from
one table edge to the other. this roadway is flanked on eithe side by a deep,
wide drainage ditch with occasional sections of concrete pipe. place a table
top long tree line at least 20" distant and paralleling the roadway along one
 side of same.

weather is cold, cloudy, with gusting wind driven snow or sleet from out of the
 NNW.

the MILITIA patrol enters the table edge at 1300 hours, local time, riding in
their vehicles. dismounted gangers are deployed inside the treeline, prior to
 1300 hours, local time.

Hi Dawgie,
that's a cool sounding game you had there - great report.

I'm not familiar with the rules you used, is the activation done by card draw?

I've done a similar thing with Darkest Africa/Back of Beyond type games and you're right - it's great when the miniatures seem to develop a mind of their own and the game spins off in a direction you hadn't expected. That's the main reason I like solo games - you get to watch the "toy's" acting in their world - and yes I name all the characters too!

Again, great stuff and thanks for sharing - do you have any more?
