War of Spanish Succession - Bavarian Drummers ?
« on: November 24, 2019, 05:51:20 PM »
I may have asked this question before... A long time ago,
but what did Bavarian drummers look like in the War of Spanish Succession ?
'Reversed Colors' (coat & cuffs) ? or the same coats & cuffs as the rest of the musketeers ?

Thanks,
MW

I believe they were in reverse colours, can't quite remember where I saw it but I am sure it's right. :)

The exact uniforms of the Bavarians are debatable but the current thinking is that they did not use reversed colours. They wore coats like the rest of the unit but with a lot of white lace on them.

So...

In 15mm I could probably 'Get Away With' using a figure in French 'Royal Livery,'
but paint him in Skyblue & White trim rather than Royal blue with Red & White trim ?

Sound Like a Cunning Plan ?

What about the Swedes from the GNW ?  I saw an image online of a (Modern) painting including a drummer with reversed colors,
but it just looked wrong somehow.

Many Thanks,
MW

I would be OK with your Bavarian plan as there is some doubt about the colour of the Bavarian coat in the WSS.

The Swedes didn't generally use reversed colours but it was a 20 year war with units being reclothed many times, often after being destroyed, and coming from various sources. So some did use reversed colours or are unknow or whatever during the time.

There is still some debate, as a previous poster has pointed out, as to what not just drummers, but also officers and NCOs wore.  It seems likely that at least up to the end of the 17th Century, these groups could have been wearing reversed colours, whilst some sources suggest that officers were wearing the same coats as the rank-and-file.  The Hall plates distributed by the Pike & Shot Society suggest that by the time of Blenheim, officers and drummers were all in blue coats; interestingly, NCOs are not mentioned in any of the infantry plates! E qually, it is possible that the disaster at Blenheim led to wholesale reclothing of the army, and all ranks ended up in the cornflower (not cornflour - and certainly not sky!) blue coats.
No plan survives first contact with the dice.

Many Thanks all round.

I'll go with 'Same Color as the  Musketeers,'
because I'm lazy, and it sort of 'Looks Right.'

And I'll use the L.A.F. as my reference should anyone ask questions.

Thanks again,
MW

First,

Thanks for all the helpful responses.

Second, thanks to the chap who provided the uniform books which, I think, answered the question.

Third, here's what I think is the answer.

For WSS Bavarian foot drummers wear reversed colors.
EXCEPT
The Leibgarde Fusilier Regiment, with white facings, whose drummers wear the same tunics and facings as the men.  But with more lace.
AND
Those Regiments with sky blue tunics AND sky blue facings.  Where because the tunics and facings are the same it would look the same whether the facings were reversed, or not.

Make Sense ?

Anyone who thinks they know the answer to the Bavarians is deluding themselves. There is no reliable information on them and the Hoffman book, which is what I think you are referring to, is one of the least reliable there is.

The good news is no one can say whatever you do is wrong. The bad news is that on the balance the evidence is against you.
