If you like the Pacific, you'll probably like this
« on: November 25, 2019, 08:33:42 PM »
I don't often post to this board, and when I do it's normally something to do with the Western Desert but, last weekend I went up to bonnie Scotland for one of our thrice yearly League of Gentlemen Wargamers weekend bashes.

The theme was 'War In The Pacific'. Not exactly my sphere of interest but, as usual the games were terrific.

A fantastic weekend ensued, and Peter N. raised the bar for game quality on the Sunday with his one off commissioned Pacific Island game mat. Get a load of this gents.

More pics and a report of the weekend's entertainment (inc. rare video footage) here:

I hope you approve!

James

Indeed... where all the games played in 28mm?

That table is really something and I am not that much into the Pacific.
But I would play that game!

All games were 28 mm. I'm not sure if the LOGW have ever gamed anything else at the themed weekend bashes, certainly not in the years I've been a member.

Spectacular looking table.

I would love to see it as the setting for a 6mm game  ::)

Lovely stuff, I spoke to Dale about possibly putting in an appearance at Roods, but so soon after Targe was pushing it a bit with the civil power. And I wasn't enamoured of the chosen rules.

Incidentally, I really like the base colour you used for your Japanese troops. What colours were you using? (By coincidence - I happen in the last week to have picked up the figures to run a Malaya campaign.)

I'm not sure which basing you are talking about. If it is about the basing of the contingent I now have on ebay:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/30-x-Warlord-28mm-WW2-Japanese-painted-by-James-Roach-aka-Olicanalad/264547104245?hash=item3d983c75f5:g:vI4AAOSwrtRd3QTT

These were sand, grit and cat litter, stained with diluted burnt umber acrylic ink (3 water : 1 ink), dry brushed with household emulsion paint - basically a dark yellowish magnolia (my sitting room) highlighted up with lighter shades of magnolia household emulsion (2nd sitting room and white).

If its not these, then I don't know.

James.

P.S.

We do not know each other, have never met (?) but, thanks for allowing me to get the plug in.

Hi James, I've only been back in the UK for three years having spent 27 in Oz, we may well have bumped into each other at one of the various Scottish shows over the last three years. I play with Dale etc up at the Kirrie club, and yes, the Japanese infantry on eBay are an absolute bargain for very nice figures..    ;)

I was intending the base colours you used for the Japanese uniforms on those (again, excellent ;)) figures..

I've just purchased a load of figures suitable for a Chain of Command Malaya campaign, and as always, I'm looking for inspiration for colour choices and modelling.

Well, I guess, I'm the English connection in case Dale gets his way and it all gets sticky up there, or he doesn't and it gets sticky for Dale lol.

The figures were all painted with Humbrol enamals:

Uniform base coat was Khaki [26] darkened with black [33];
1st highlight is 26,
2nd highlight is 26 plus sand [63].
Webbing is stone [84] and 33.
1st highlight is 84.
2nd highlight is 84 plus white [34].

Faces are wine [73] and black [33]
1st highlight is 73, plus flesh [61], plus yellow [24]
2nd highlight is 61 + 24.

Other bits and pieces are in various browns, etc. Everything, of course, is double highlighted because I only paint to one standard, for myself, clients, or a one off game.

Hope that helps - though enamels are not everyone one's cup of tea.

PS Bases finished with dark tufts (from somewhere) highlighted with the household emulsion, other flock is Woodland Scenic coarse turf [burnt grass.]

Thanks for that, and we'll be quite fine up here. We'll just look sorrowfully South at the remains of a once great Empire..    ;)

And you're right, I haven't used enamels in about 20 years. But I can easily proxy using acrylics. I'm also tempted to add some yellow or cream to get that slight yellowish tinge in Japanese uniforms.

Thanks for the paint guide. All the best.
