Thanks for saying so!

Ok, we have an EXPEDITION!

I painted a few adventurers, Lord Harry Lovatt-Standing and his chums.

What I need now is some wildlife!

I think the initial wildlife I will concentrate on will simply reflect the wildlife of Africa.  I can do dinosaurs another time.

I don’t really know where this is going yet suffice to say I’m enjoying the building of it.

I have just put in an order with Northstar for a range of animals, including an elephant, rhino, buffalo, hyenas, oryx,  ostrich,  leopard and cheetahs….enough to get me started.

I rather fancy a small mixed herd of wilderbeest and zebras along with a stalking hunt of lioness but that will have to wait until another time.

I already have a hippo herd, and sat on the side awaiting a brush I have some gorillas, and a few crocs.

Cheers fella.

I may not necessarily be any good at it, but if truth be told, I think I prefer trying to copy animal patterning, especially as they pretty much will all look the same to having to make up colour combos for individual human figures.

I’m looking forward to painting the oryx for example…..looking at the following pictures, I’m hoping pretty straight forward, but should look collectively cool.

They are also known in Southern Africa as Gemsbok and they taste really good - indeed the best meat I have ever had - during my time living in South West Africa, now called Namibia.

Wow! Lots to love in this thread… particularly your jungle terrain pieces and those porters.

I am green with envy.

Ok, I really wanted a bagged big cat……but I would have to have spent a kings ransome to get a model I wasn’t overly fond of.   Suggested I do my own so a quick rummage and I had the remains of a Perry Zulu sprue I bought to make the jazz band and a warlord farmyard mule.     A little modification and one bagged zebra for the train…and tonight’s dinner!

Painting an upside down zebra wasn’t easy so I apologise but actually I’m pretty made up seeing as this cost me nothing!

The Perry zulus are a good match alongside the Foundry askaris too.  You can’t really see it in these pics….but I did beef up the neck on the lead fella….just to show they’d picked the strongest blokes to do the heavy lifting…….plains zebra males weighing in between 240 - 320kg  😉

If anyone has a spare mule from the Warlord farmyard sprue, please let me know, I wouldn’t mind making a standing version of the same fella……pre kill.

Food that comes with its own bar-code. lol
Excellent job David.
If you still hunker after Lion I suggest you look at kiddy
African play sets. A lot cheaper than metal, easier to cut
up, & weighs less (got to think about the poor bearers). lol

Cheers Pete.  I actually already ordered a DeeZee lion as I thought it would be funny if a male lion (known for their laziness and allowing others to kill for them) we’re to attack in order to pinch the carcass!

The big issue I have with plastic animal play sets is the mix of scales usually prevalent in any bag of animals.   I will paint up the ordered metals then see what I’m missing, but to be fair, there are quite a few available.

True, but I adopt the following:-
a) Use whatever is 'in scale' for my wants
b) Convert the rest to Alien beasts (e.g. Oversize leopards had their tails cut off & were
painted bright blue),  Statues or, even, given to children to play with. lol lol lol

No kidding.  An adult zebra can weight upwards of 500 lbs.  Those must be some strong bearers!   :D

Digits, War in 15MM does a lot of stuff in 28 mm.  Have a look at the link below for his Africa gallery.

https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=75217.0

Hope this works, should be his image of a dead lion on a pole between two bearers:

It is his Large 28 MM Darkest Africa Gallery.

Of course, with your very cool dead zebra that you went above and beyond on, this may be too little, too late but you might still be interested.  At the very least, if you haven't seen it before, spend time checking out his site for possible inspiration.

And feel free to contact him to see if he recalls where figures you might be interested in were sourced.  He's a good guy and very responsive.  And immensely creative and prolific like nobody's business.  Why, a bit like you.

Fun stuff.

One day - maybe even this year! - I will have to post my own African adventures here.   Much painted, much, much more still to paint!
