The theme of the archer levy is very much peasants defending their homes, so these are not shieldmaidens of Rohan but rather brave young women who have joined the levy.

What do you think?

These are brilliant!

Thank you both!

I have finished building and greenstuffing the next set of minis for this project and now I think it is time to start painting. Its been a while since I did this much greenstuff work, too used to just put plastic bits together with no sculpting needed. Anyway, I think it turned out fine after some trial and error.

So we have here a Warlord, perhaps Theoden himself or another king or lord of the mark, his champion (they whisper behind his back that his mother was a beorning or perhaps a dunledning, but he is strong and loyal), four elite Riders with javelins and four with hand weapons. I decided not to equip any with spears as I want to clearly show javelins/no javelins as that is more relevant in SAGA.

Kits used for these are all Victrix: Norman cavalry, Vikings, Anglo-saxons and Dacians.

I had originally hoped to use Victrix normans as both hearthguard and warriors, figuring I could perhaps differentiate with helmets, aventails or no aventails or something. When I started building though the minis I came up with gave me strong hearthguard vibes and I realised it would be hard for an opponent to tell what was what if I used them for warriors too.

Looking around, there's not a ton of options that match Victrix that well, but I found some 3D minis. basque ligth cavalry, from Reconquer designs (bought prints from Stronghold Terrain, they sell some of these at really good prices) as well as the one pack of Norman cavalry without maille that V&V make. For the V&V minis, I ended up discarding the horses and javelins as I wasn't super keen on the resin, as well as replacing some heads and adding some cloaks. All the plastic parts are Victrix.

In the end, I think I mangaged to build 12 models that are reasonably coherent looking, fit the brief as Rohirrim (beards, long hair, horses, cloaks), as should match reasonably well with my Victrix armoured riders.

Trying to get on with some painting now, hoping to have something more to show soon. In the meantime, I snapped a shot of the second lot of levy with bows. You saw the kitbashed ladies earlier, I added some Viking archers from stronghold terrain and then build a few Victrix.

The armoured lad is a Victrix saxon with arms from the archer set. He will represent a unit leader responsible for trying to keep the peasants in line. Also used a few hooded heads from Oathmark.

Thank you!

Now for something painted for once. Not shown these before but I built these Bad Squiddo mounted shieldmaidens back when I made my first set of cavalry fro the Black Duns force. However, it quickly became evident that I had no use for Medium Cavalry in Oathmark, and they sat primed on my desk for a long time. Picked them back up last week and decided I may use them for Rohan.

I am approaching this project as I do all my source material, which is to say as inspiration only. Tolkien mentions the word shieldmaiden of Rohan, and that is plenty excuse for me to include a whole bunch of them if I can find minis.

I think they look great! Definitely too good to sit on the sidelines- I would be inclined to use them in Oathmark games on a ‘counts as’ basis. As long as you’ve paid the points for them as ‘heavy cavalry’ and your opponent knows that’s what they’re classified as, it shouldn’t impact game play! If you need to justify that classification, it’s magic or exceptional training, or whatever… (I might be more flexible than average about this, but to me making reasonable accommodation is part of wargaming, especially in a fantasy game like Oathmark)
