And another update. Still no painting done, but another 20 infantry built. I know there is some difference between Soldiers and Spearmen, but not sure what's preferable yet so I built some Soldiers to go with the Spearmen and Warriors shown earlier.

Fireforge Northmen and Frostgrave Barbarian bodies with Oathmark human arms and Victrix viking weapons and heads. There are also a couple of Frostgrave, Oathmark and Conquest medievals heads spread in there.

What do you think? (I know, I know, you think I should get on with painting them :P)

They look the biz mate

 :)

Always nice to see you slap some paint on them, but to be fair I’ve gone through a bit of a barren patch myself in terms of painting ... at least you are still being productive, churning out models for the paint queue.

Nigh impossible to photograph due to massive size, but here he is anyway. Oathmark also gave me the motivation to finish this Warploque Frost Dragon that I've had half finished on my workbench for maybe four years. The base is 50x100mm.

Here we go, first unit painted. Square shields as discussed earlier, tried to stick to a very limited colour palette. Also finished a Hero, the foot version of Aethelflaed.

great stuff- that limited colour palette has worked a treat - and love the dynamic overall look.

Great work, I tried something similar with some statuesque heads and female warriors 2 kit. It worked well. You achieved great animation and real character  with these figures. Please post some pics of them when they are painted!

Thank you! If you mean the female soldiers on page 1, there are painted pictures on page 2 and 3 of the thread.

Quick interlude. This Copplestone Frost Giant is really a 15mm model, but perfect in size as a 28mm Ogre. I intend to use this one in Rangers of Shadow Deep.

Got my spearmen painted. Took a shot from the side as well because I'm quite happy with the hedge they form ranked up.

Thoughts?

Those look great! The parts from the different sets blend really well and I like the palette you chose.

The only question I have is about the formation- is it possible to rank the figures so the the men holding the spears in two hands are in the second rank and attack past men in the first rank who are bracing their shields? It could give the impression of a shield wall meeting the enemy, but maximizing defense. The current formation gives more of an aggressive, charging to contact, impression. The current formation is great, just wondering if the other posture is feasible.

I’m looking forward to seeing the other units you have in progress when they are complete!

(Just curious- what size base is the 15mm giant/28mm ogre on? I may add one of those guys to my collection!)

Not sure, will have to try. I think a couple of the spears are most likely to low to rank up.

The giant is on a 40mm round base.

Well, even if they don’t rank up well as a shield wall, the look suitably intimidating the way they are!

Thanks for the information on the base size, 40mm is the answer I was hoping for.
