My Own Sphinx Riddle
« on: December 12, 2019, 06:04:59 AM »
My current conundrum is finding a suitable winged Sphinx figure that matches what the Time Machine novel describes:

“My sensations would be hard to describe. As the columns of hail grew thinner, I saw the white figure more distinctly. It was very large, for a silver birch-tree touched its shoulder. It was of white marble, in shape something like a winged sphinx, but the wings, instead of being carried vertically at the sides, were spread so that it seemed to hover. The pedestal, it appeared to me, was of bronze, and was thick with verdigris. It chanced that the face was towards me; the sightless eyes seemed to watch me; there was the faint shadow of a smile on the lips. It was greatly weather-worn, and that imparted an unpleasant suggestion of disease. I stood looking at it for a little space—half a minute, perhaps, or half an hour. It seemed to advance and to recede as the hail drove before it denser or thinner. At last I tore my eyes from it for a moment and saw that the hail curtain had worn threadbare, and that the sky was lightening with the promise of the sun.”

So ... I’m thinking of a seated winged Greek-like Shinx like this as my FIRST choice:

DIMENSIONS: Hopefully something about an inch to an inch and a half  from head to foot, so about two to two and a half inches tall with the extended wings.

Any suggestions?  I’ve been looking at charms, amulets and other jewelry, but nothing so far.

Thanks

Dan
PS.  My SECOND choice would be an Egyptian winged Sphinx of similar dimensions.

And my THIRD choice is a more loose interpretation like this:

The Egyptian goddess Isis is often depicted with wings (but may be too "human" for your needs?)
From Amazon - search "Egyptian goddess isis figurine"

This is intended for use as a statue, not a living creature, right?  Assuming so, I see quite a few listings (mostly on etsy) searching for "greek sphinx winged" but none that are really good matches for those first two images.  Mostly way too big as well, although there were a few that were listed as being about the right size.

Hi, Dan! Long time no see.

Given your chops, I'm actually surprised you haven't already found suitable figs of lion, eagle, and woman to cut and paste.

You KNOW I'd dream and maybe collect pieces and never get anything completed. *sigh*

OK Dan, is this going to be part of your setup using the "mole drill" you built a while back?

As for the sphinx, I think one ot the "Tubz" is a set of landmarks that may contain the NYC library lions.  You could use that for the body and attach some unicorn wings and the head of your choice.  However, if this is for anything larger than 15mm it would probably be too small.

Of the drawings, I think the last would be more suited for an effigy built by the Morlocks.

Anyway, when you build this you will be required to post a tutorial.  That is your penalyt for mentioning this project on LAF. :)

Lol.  Challenge accepted guys.

This was an old test to see if I could make a proper Morlock lair ramp and pool:

And this was an even older test to see if I could sculpt a proper Morlock face on a Sphinx:

But, when it comes to the body and wings of the Sphinx, I think I may need to “cannibalize” from other figures, and then I can graft the face to the appropriate body.  :). Mwahahaha

I reckon a quick peruse on eBay or such for a 'Winged Lion' would throw up a bunch of ornaments that could be decapitated.

Been doing quite a few online searches, including ebay.  I think I might have spotted a couple of candidates.

I’ll know once I get them in person.  Fingers crossed.
