Danes in Estonia 1919
« on: December 13, 2019, 09:53:44 AM »
In 1919 Denmark sent a little detachment with about 200 volunteers to fight in Estonia.
Uniforms and and equipment came to a large degree from England.
The uniforms were not regular army uniforms, but uniforms with a special pattern meant for Englishmen returning from foreign prison camps.
Does anyone here know how these uniforms looked? or maybe even have pictures?
The colour of the uniform seems to have been in a light brown khaki?

I guess you have already seen the Osprey Elite 227 Armies of the Baltic Independence Wars 1918-20?

On page 22 they claim that the 215 men strong Danish Borgelin Company wore Danish Army M1915 grey uniforms with  a non-regulation sidecap? If this is incorrect there is a photo on page 25 and 29 showing privates of the elite Estonian Scouts Regiment in surplus British uniforms - maybe these might be similar?

No, I do not have that Osprey.
Yes, it is correct, the Danes travelled to Estonia in grey Danish uniforms and wore these in the beginning, as the British uniforms for political reasons had been sent directly to Estonia and somehow stored some then unknown place, They were quickly found and issued, when the Danish uniforms wore out.
The question is: how were the British uniforms different from the English regular field uniforms?

Excellent question!  :)

Lets hope some of our British brethren can help out

Cracking little war.  Needs more exposure....

There is a possibility that the both pictures above show the non-combat uniform for former prisoners of war.
Somewhere I seem to recall that the uniform had a darker edge on the cuffs, further the pictures also seem to show smaller breast-pockets.
But still there must onthis forum be some specialist on British uniforms, who is able to answer it rather easily.
