BSC2020 Wirelizard- Ruined English Abbey
« on: December 26, 2019, 06:33:10 PM »
Been thinking about added some semi-modular ruin bits to my English countryside scenery to represent that stock fixture of Gothic/pulp/folk horror England, the abandoned and ruined abbey.

Need to hunt down some photos of the real thing, or Hollywood's version of the real thing...

Yes,  maybe we will see it on the table at Trumpeter's in the spring.  :)

You quite likely will! The Pulp Alley game I'm thinking of running for Trumpeter Salute 2020 is currently titled "Werewolves of England" and will feature players as werewolves competing to be Wolf King of England, so they run around the table inflicting gristly fates on livestock, villagers, and possibly each other.

Semi-random linkdump for inspiration and so I can find them again:

Leiston Abbey - https://digventures.com/leiston-abbey/
...especially the photos here: https://digventures.com/leiston-abbey/timeline/diary/day-9-invasion-of-the-flying-archaeologists/
(cool site but impossible to find sh*t on. Use Google Search instead)

Hore Abbey (Ireland) - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hore_Abbey
(layout is nice and compact...)

Monk Bretton Priory - https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/monk-bretton-priory
(also fairly compact and an interesting plan, with a good mix of ruined bits)

A lot of the famous and touristy ruins (Tintern Abbey, say) are sodding massive and way too big for this project.

Anyone got a good atmospheric abbey-like ruin to share? This random colonial is somewhat hampered by being on the wrong side of an ocean and a continent from the source material for this sort of thing!

Barrow in Furness Abbey - while it is big has lots of different areas, one might inspire.

Also worth a look at the English Heritage  website, they have lots of smaller buildings under their custodianship

Neath is a big one, but has some nice aspects, like the huge blocks of masonry on the grass and the veritable cemetery of stones at one end.

The werewolf theme sounds good.  8)
