BSC 2020 Overlord's Archaeological Ruins
« on: January 15, 2020, 12:10:32 AM »
Finally throwing my hat into the ring.  I've been exceptionally busy with real life the past few weeks, but hope to get enough time for an entry.

My first thought when the contest was announced was to build a ruined version of the Folly I built for BSC2018.  However, the rock outcrop for it was a piece of bark and I didn't think I would be able to find a matching piece.  It would also be very time consuming, time that I don't envisage having in the coming weeks.

Therefore I have decided to build some generic ruins.  Most of my terrain is desert based, so it will fit in with that. I have a scenario for a future Back of Beyond game that needs some archaeological ruins/dig site so have decided to make it suitable for that.  By making some elements removable, and with the addition of further items post BSC, I hope to make it a fairly useful item for other periods/genre: Back of Beyond, Pulp, Fantasy, Mogadishu'93, Sci-Fi (SG1, Dune, 7TV), Post Apoc, etc

My rough scribblings and thoughts:

I will be making two or three separate bases.  Two of actual ruins and a third (If time allows) of some excavations.
The ruined walls will have wooden scaffold that can be removed depending on period/scenario.

Can we use that site for our summer 2020 Uni archaeology fieldwork?  :D
We'd need awnings, the sun DOES get hot in late June... ;)

Awnings aren't something I had considered.  I defer to your expertise and hope I don't give you too many glaring errors to pick me up on.  My archaeology experience is limited to watching episodes of Time Team and digging up a US steel helmet in my grandparents garden when I was 10.  :D

A mock-up of what I am aiming for:

All just balanced together to give me an idea of layout etc.  The 'stone' blocks of blue foam that will be sanded to take the edges off.  The cardboard and cocktail sticks as temporary scaffold.
The early work on the project is being overseen by the eminent archaeologist Sir Doug Test-Pitt.  ;)

The 'stone' blocks of blue foam that will be sanded to take the edges off.

If you put them in a tupperware box with some gravel and shake them it does the same thing, and it makes small surface dents etc. that 'age' the stone blocks.  The more vigorous you shake it the more dented they get.  You can also roll a handful together between your hands to round off the edges.

That's how I did the ones in this wall:

I also tore the corners off a few blocks before the shaking process to get the damaged ones.

Paul - Love the idea and the mock up. It has given me some ideas for an ancients game and terrain.

Mark - Great tip for the stones. Likewise with the ideas.
