Red Weed (my take on how to make it...)
« on: January 20, 2020, 09:36:01 PM »
Hi all

With the recent threads about Martian Tripods, I thought this might be of vague interest.
I have looking at the invasion of Earth, although this could be used on the Martian home world, specifically at how to do the spreading red weed that seems to travel with Martians.

I kind of like this solution of using Halloween decoration 'spider web' to replicate the weed. This is just a first run at it, so I may refine it a bit, certainly cut it up to create pockets of growth etc. Open to suggestions, maybe something to make it stand out more.

Now I am using this for an AQMF game that I am prepping, but please do not let that hold you back from looking, it can be used for so many games :D

I like the idea.
May I suggest you take a pair of scissors & make the borders various curves.
If it is a weed it would not have straight edges. Then you could lay down
patches of weed while leaving 'safe' pathways. Risky to humans, but not as risky as the weed.
You might stick some of the off-cuts thus created onto the tri-pod's base.
Would help tie it all in.

Great idea and looks fantastic. I am gaming the Anglo-Martian War 1895, the first invasion, so I am on the look out for various means to portray the Red Weed.

I am using a little red lichen along rivers to show its initial advance, but need to ramp up for a scenario where the British are launching a raid into occupied territory.

A really inventive use - I’d second making the edges curved...you could easily have overlapping sections

 :)

Hi

Thanks for the comments!

Yes cutting them up into irregular shapes is a good idea, and the way to go.
The current pictures are sort of a proof of concept test. I do think I will keep some sheets as they are quick to cover large swaths of terrain, particularly streets. The rolls are 9' long 6" wide, so I do have a fair amount to work with.

I am also considering using some woodland scenic red clump foliage as accents, on the weed sheets, and on some tripod stands. Also thought about red lichen.

My issue is that even doubled up it sometimes is not enough to really stand out. I will cut up shapes on Sunday and do some more tests. I may resort to some red sprayed overhead transparency sheets placed underneath the weeds.

You might also try dry-brushing a couple of different shades of red. That will
help to make it look more 3D.

Great idea and a lot of good tips.

Of course, in Colorado, if you say your making red weed you might have all kinds of new "friends". *grin*
