Galactic Heros 15mm AAR: War Trekking Across the Universe
« on: January 22, 2020, 03:43:42 AM »
I backed Galactic Heroes when it was out on Kickstarter with the idea that I could play it with my kids.  They both LOVE Flash Gordon, Star Wars, and my son loves the original Star Trek tv show.  For Christmas I built them each an army that would be their own, complete with figs, a terrain piece, cards, and dice.  My daughter received a jedi with some clone troopers (plus an Action Fleet AT-TE as a spawn point) while my son received the crew of the USS Enterprise plus the shuttle craft Galileo (a Halmark ornament).  Both pieces scale perfectly with 15mm, and are pretty reasonably priced if you watch Ebay.  This past Saturday we field tested their new armies with them allied against Un-fun Dad and his alliance of evil (some self created bounty hunters and storm troopers).  They had five figs each vs my 8, each of them with a leader, specialist, and 3 regulars while I had one leader, two specialists and 5 regulars.

This would give them a slight advantage to help make it more fun for them.  The board was 3ft x 3ft, with plenty of terrain and a straight up mission of 'disintegrate the other team'.

The Star peoples started on one board edge, and the scum/villany started in the other.  On the opening turns my daughter moved up cautiously while my son tried to find every potential attack point to start phasering everything possible (he's pretty blood thirsty for a Starfleet cadet).  Meanwhile I split teams, the storm troopers moving up to deal with the trekkies and the bounty hunters flowing through town to deal with the jedi scum.

The Federation drew first blood (gasp! phasers set to kill?) by downing one of the miscellaneous goons that the nefarious Red Ryder had hired to deal with the jedi.

The storm troopers retaliated by felling Mr. Spock and advancing up on the sneaking Dr. McCoy, who had hoped to save the impetuous Vulcan.

Kirk, in typical fashion tried to tackle the evil klingo...gor...hunters, seeking vengence for his crew, only to find he was slightly out of range of his phaser, but not of the enemy sniper.  Unlike a typical script, he had no plot armor and the sniper rolled a 10 to hit and a 10 to wound, promptly dropping the the good captain (we forgot the 9 lives trait until the last turn of the game, and by then it was too late).

The clones converged on the crew by this point and endevered to add support, only to be caught in the cross fire.  Things were looking pretty desperate by this stage for my kids.  Kirk and Spock were down, and the clones had just barely moved into the firing lines.  They managed to knock down a lone trooper sneaking up on the wounded captain, but their jedi was apparently fresh out of the academy and struggled over 3 successive rounds with a lone mook bounty hunter while Uhura was hit in the ensuing crossfire.

Red Ryder toucched off his jet-pack and hoped over to the top of his ship and between himself and the sniper gunned down almost the entire clone army themselves.  Going into the final round, the jedi was the only one left of the clone force, wounded and having lost her lightsaber during the fight with the mook,  Scotty, a wounded McCoy and Uhura vs Red and his sniper.  With range, and no wounds it looked like a sure victory for Un-fun Dad.  At this point though, my luck ran out.  In truly climactic fashion Red and the Sniper both ran out of ammo and  McCoy fired with two 10s to hit and two 10s to wound.  Zap! Zap!  Red Ryder would crawl wounded and bleeding into his ship, vowing revenge.

Kids had a great time in the end, despite Dad's hot streak for a few turns.  Going with 8 on 10 worked out well, as despite my killer shooting (bah dump! *ching* Thanks folks, I'm here all week, tip your waiter) in the end they were able to pull off a come back.

Great report. The game sounds like lots of fun. Must say I love the red surface of your game board - it really pops things! Thanks for sharing!
