An interesting topic, but could we please use proper demonyms to avoid slurs like "Japanese" et al.

Thank you very much.

I thought we had been? Oh well. I agree with the sentiment though.

Don't worry was not you Doug was the Capt.

Personally although I am not against shortening such as Y#$ks or J#ps but there are other ones that are not considered acceptable on a general forums these days

The Germans , Brits and French seem to have the most nicknames but not so much the Russians - Ivan's anyone?

For the Japanese I like "Men of Yamato" myself  :-X

I was unaware that a certain term was seen as a slur I have contacted Westfalia Chris regarding this...is Y##nks derogatory? Didn’t know that either? I have Russian heritage and don’t see ‘Ivan’ as being as issue are we being too PC?

I don't think there's such a thing as too PC. It's just elementary politeness. Personally I get offended by some of therms used for Scottish people, and there's no need to use slang or deprecated terms.

Hi all,

I don't thing Capt. Darling used the term intentionally to denigrate, but "Jap" in particular is a rather outdated and offensive word these days, and it isn't really necessary. Just a matter of thinking twice if a term is appropriate or if it might be better to use a more neutral one.

I'll see if I can put up some "suggestions" in the board rules, but unless the use in question is blatantly offensive and intentionally so, I would rather rely on members to use their common sense and decency to think about it.

Remember that we do have members from all over the world, and there are those who may be justifiably offended by certain terms.

This photo from the inside of a Type 95 hatch may have preserved more of the original yellow colour.
