Yes, well worth it, the detail is fantastic - so much more going on in those woodcuts than you can appreciate. I particularly enjoyed the camp scenes, artillery and images of light cavalry

Are the earliest Landsknechts shown at Pavia (i.e. mid 1520s) or are there any earlier?

You're probably aware of The Assault Group's range of early Landsknechts(?):

Ah, sorry, I can't really help you with that.... 15 mil just isn't a scale I collect (though I'm happy to play it) :)

It’s mainly 1520-1540

Early stuff is very briefly covered but not in any detail

That's a bit of a shame. Still, I expect that a camp scene in 1520 looks very much the same as 1500 if you ignore the fashion etc so it will still be a very useful book to have.

It's the fashion that is crucial for the earlier lads....

Well, it does say from "1500-1550" on the Amazon description. hopefully this is correct as Stuart has already alluded to (as well the paucity of 'early' images respectively)

It’s worth it for the detail, you can get lost in it - so much inspiration for infinite vignettes.

I should really order a copy ASAP. Got Vappa tomorrow though, which is going to waylay the wallet somewhat!

How much analysis is in the book? I've seen and printed out some of the woodcuts from Landsknecht websites from c.1998, so want something with more than just pictures, especially as it's $42.

Not much.

Hale’s Artists and Warfare in the Renaissance has analysis in spades if that’s what you’re after.

I already have Artists and Warfare in the Renaissance and it's a great reference. I'll wait for another Amazon coupon offer...
