Generic 28mm sci-fi troops?
« on: February 29, 2020, 09:41:31 AM »
Looking for a range of generic 28mm sci-fi troops to represent infantry from the Battletech universe. I really like the Mantic GCPS Troopers, but I think they might be a little too near-future/colonial marine and not quite far-future/Battletech enough.

Preference for plastic, modern minis. And bonus points if there's powered battle armour troops in the same range!

If you can go to 25mm metal, I'd recommend the GZG Stargrunt miniatures. They have a nice range of troops with some powered armour as well... you may even find some clan battle armour in there if you look hard enough...

Not plastic, but have you had a look at Pig Iron's ranges?

Some of the gates of Antares stuff might work, mainly the concord I would think.

Otherwise Hasslefree have some brilliant metal sci fi troopers, and CP miniatures have some reasonably priced very nice sci fi troopers that might be a bit too near future for what you want but worth a look maybe?

There are several good options in the "Maelstrom's Edge" range.
Multipart plastic miniatures.  There are several factions with different look and feel (the Epirian forces probably closest to what you want).

The range has various small mecha/battle armour models

Wargames Atlantic has some boxed sets of plastic scifi troops. Their Grognards box has various head options, some are more generic than others.

Anvil Industries do multi-part troops with lots of options to choose from, as well as the Afterlife range, which is well worth a look at.

Moonraker miniatures sell the old Metal Magic Spacelords which are definitely worth a browse.

The GZG figures are nice.

Slightly more modern Maelstrom's Edge figures:

Epirian SecDef troops.

Copplestone‘s future warrior troopers are the way to go imo. Sold via Northstar (newer sculpts) as well as several other sellers (em4, mirliton) for the older ranges.

Anvil's Afterlife range has two distinct styles, I'd probably see the Unity Council regular infantry as Steiner--but these are a more true 28mm than many other options.

Anvil's Regiments line is more 'heroic', and includes robed cultists (and bionic parts... I wonder who they'd work for? 😁) plus loads of other options. You could easily make scads of mercenaries and assorted troops from their choices.
Heresy's sci fi troopers would make good Davions imo. If you can find the old Mongoose Starship Troopers infantry (rebel minis has them iirc) they were also the inspiration for the unarmoured Ghost Bear Elementals on the cover of Field Manual: Updates.
Pig Iron's near future minis would work well too, the Kolony range has some really characterful parts.

I've got a load of Empress moderns, I've considered using their Chinese as Capellans in the past, and Under Fire/eureka minis with head swaps as periphery troops.

Sadly Anvil Miniatures Afterlife range is being phased out.

There is a notice on their web page that they will be redesigned to be more compatible with the Regiments range, which I have mixed feelings about really.

Anvil Industries, Pig Iron, Hasslefree, and Puppet Wars make excellent generic future troopers.  Highly recommended.

I had forgotten about these (I think they are the ones Hasslefree used to sell)

Gates of Antares for far future, Maelstrom's Edge for near future.

GoA has high tech (concord), mid tech (Algoryn) and tribal (Freeborn), all in plastic.

That is sad. The regiments range is good, but not consistent. The heads could do with being a tad smaller and less spherical in some cases.
