Early Medieval Slav army
« on: March 06, 2020, 05:41:34 PM »
Way back when Gripping Beast released their very first Viking plastics, I bought a whole lot of them. I assembled them all, and painted about half, and then got distracted by Early Modern wargaming and forgot about them.

Around the beginning of this year, I decided to revisit and complete my Vikings. But while that process is ongoing, I decided I also need an opposing army, so I decided on building some Early Slavs. I am pleased to report that I have (nearly) completed that project, with an entirely uncharacteristic focus and alacrity.

This project almost entirely comprised of Gripping Beast plastics, namely the Dark Age Warriors, Cavalry, and Archers sets, with a tiny smattering of other GB plastic bits, some Warlord Games Celt bits, and even the odd Perry Zouave head. There are also 8 GB metal figures, a bunch of Pagan Rus metal shields, and several Falklands War British metal heads (with the wool caps converted to fur-lined hats.)

With regards to army composition, I literally just looked up the DBA list for Early Slavs and then doubled the figure count. Since that totals to less than 24 pts in Lion Rampant, I then added some elite infantry to bring them up to the target.

These were speedpainted pretty haphazardly, so I'll go back and do some cleanup at some point. Also, I did decide I want to build 6 more elite infantry and a commander before I call this project actually done, so I'll post those as well when they're ready.

Thanks everyone, I'm glad you like them!

I finished the last seven minis for this project, here they are:

Let me know if you have any thoughts for a flag that one guy can be waving. I was thinking of maybe adapting one of the motifs from the Perun wikipedia page, something simple and pagan.

A version of this would be fab- it could be quite graphic once you abstracted from the image:

I'm glad I took your recommendation, Atheling, I think this banner is more characterful with Perun than it would have been with one of those hexagon motifs.

Realistically it should probably have a border, but I think I like it as-is...

Yeah, it looks great. I agree about the border, though if you do decide to add one don't let the border overwhelm the central motif.

Fab work on a great set of mini's  8)

That's a new one.  :o :)
The laws of probability do not apply to my dice in wargames or to my finesses in bridge.

Thanks everyone, I'm glad you like them!

I rehabbed enough of my Vikings to field an opposing force, just a group shot here as they're a pretty standard bunch.
