Midway Japanese wargame
« on: April 16, 2020, 08:06:51 PM »
I have a blog post about the wargame run by the Japanese Navy before the Battle of Midway

https://corlearshookfencibles.blogspot.com/2020/04/

It is a lesson in how not to umpire a game.
And the glorious general led the advance
With a glorious swish of his sword and his lance
And a glorious clank of his tin-plated pants. - Dr. Seuss

You just have to love examples of overconfidence.
My favourite is Brig. Sedgewick. Having been advised to not
stand in full view of the Confederates, his last words were,
'Nonsense, they couldn't hit an elephant at this dist.....'
Mind you having had the privilege of standing on that spot,
and seeing how far away the Rebel positions were he was
very unlucky.

In fairness to Sedgewick, he was shot by a skilled sniper using a long-range Whitworth rifle with a scope. But it does qualify as overconfidence.

You are very welcome. I am reading slowly - this science fiction movie I woke up in is distracting. After reading about the slaughter of the Midway planes and the torpedo squadrons, I finally got to where McClusky's dive bombers get into the fray. Whew.
