Recommend a really dark grey (acrylic)
« on: April 03, 2020, 12:00:38 PM »
The darkest grey I’ve got is a Tamiya Dark Grey XF-24. I want something darker still - like almost black but not black. Has anyone a recommendation of such a beast?

Thanks

Doug

The dark grey on this ship is Vallejo Basalt Grey, any good?

I use Vallejo Model Color German Grey when I'm painting something black, but want to still shade it with black paint and that shading still be visible. It's got a blueish tint.

Here's an example of German Grey with black in the recesses (the black cats obvs): https://www.facebook.com/statuesqueminiatures/photos/a.10150125595682384/10158237093792384/?type=3&theater

Edit: GW's not-black black is Corvus Black, though I've never actually used it. I'm guessing it's pretty black though, just not as black as their other black black. https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Base-Corvus-Black-2019

The Army Painter Necromancer Cloak is a very dark gray - don't be put off by the 'fantasy' name.

Paynes Grey. I use artists acrylics or watercolours mixed with acrylic medium. I have a pot too which I think is W&N

Thanks everyone. They all look pretty good to me so I’ll apply my usual second tier test, which one is the cheapest. I shall research it.

Antonio - is that Model Colour or Game Colour?

Yeah, Vallejo has simple "Black Grey" which is a deep charcoal colour.

Humbrol 32 is pretty dark grey and has no blue tint to my eye.

This is my goto colour for 'almost black'

Scalecolour Eclipse Grey is what I use for black, followed by a black wash.

And yes, it is super matte.

Privateer Press do a Coal Black in their P3 paints which is a very dark bluish-gray. It's almost black, but not quite. Not sure if it's what you're looking for, though.
