Normans in Italy
« on: April 05, 2020, 09:39:58 AM »
New Osprey Normans in Italy coming out.

https://ospreypublishing.com/store/military-history/upcoming-books/preorder-3-months/the-normans-in-italy-1016-1194-pb

I got interested in the Normans activity in Italy and their eventual clash with the Byzantine Empire, after reading the John Julius Norwich excellent books on the subject so looking forward to getting hold of this book.

I am hoping Osprey with eventually do a “Campaign” series book on the battle of Dyrrhachium.

Now that's peaked my interest. I'm coming to the end of JJ Norwich's 'Normans in Sicily' now (big old tome innit?) after getting hooked on the various Jack Ludlow trilogies about the de Hautevilles in Italy.
'Sir John ejaculated explosively, sitting up in his chair.' ... 'The Black Gang'.

That will be one that I will pick up.  I have always found Robert Guiscard interesting.

Excellent! I've been living in Norman Italy for years now and I've wanted to do a small force of Normans.

It is that..can I suggest Alfred Duggan's Count Bohemond which brillantly captures time and place.

For the sake of balance, there is JJ Norwich three volume series on the Byzantine Empire which I would recommend as a great read  :)

Ties in well with the Victrix Normans, I'd say. Exciting period of history.

Norman Wisdom? Norman Tebbit? Norman Bates? I’d say Italy has suffered enough. Basta! I say.

So many fascinating campaigns, so little time  :D

I have some reservations with Raffaele D’Amato’s scholarship as he can be a little too ‘enthusiastic’ in presenting possible situations/conclusions as fact.

George Theotokis’ The Norman Campaigns in the Balkans is worth a looksee, especially the first half of the book.

Right mon ami, I've finally got round to following up your recommendation. I've bought a used copy online, many thanks.
