Quick question - what is that around the bridge in this photo?

looks like some sort of padding?

Does anyone have any other photos showing something similar, on a RN vessel?

Seem to remember that IJN vessels used something similar - looked a bit like sandbags.

Any help much appreciated!

I believe it is called 'anti-splinter padding or matting'.  Flower Class corvettes often packed it around the bridge as extra protection against splinters (who knew!  ;) ).

Here's a small pic with some of the mats visible.

In earlier days these splinter mats were made of rolled up hammocks but of course that's not what you're looking for.
Definitely NOT sandbags, as that wouldn't work in a vertical plane.

I have one reference that calls them splinter 'matresses' , but another one mentions that 'splinter mats were welded to the bridge' which would mean at least the outer shell was metal?

Then again someone mentions that they were also used as makeshift life rafts.
