Diadochi at 6mm
« on: April 09, 2020, 04:00:19 PM »
Greetings,

I have long been a fan of Successor armies.  I also wanted a go at 6mm so why not combine the two into one.  I went and purchased the equivalent of two successor armies from baccus in mid-2019 and have finally gotten around to painting them up.  I will be basing them on 60mm x 60mm bases.  That can normally fit 4 28mm models on 25mm bases onto a 60 x 60 base.

I have never done 6mm before, so here goes.  I first watched a bunch of tutorials and was delighted to find out that much of the "painting" is just dabbing color here and there.  Heartened, i was will to give it a shot.

I don't necessarily have pre-determined army lists I am building for.  Instead, I want a variety of units so I can easily make up two separate forces of Successor armies to play the 7 Wars of the Diadochi.  I plan on using some homebrew rules I call Heirs to Empire.

I started with some Archers to get the feel for how this works, and completed 3 bases, so about 90+ figures total, or 32 or so per base.

Some key learnings I had were:

1. You should clip them up before you paint them
2. Paint the ground first
3. Basing is really important on 6mm figures (and hard on brushes)

So, next up I plan on working on some Heavy Cavalry.

Whatever works for you, but I remember finding strips of figures much easier to handle and paint; and in the case of phalangites, I used to base them without ever clipping.
The laws of probability do not apply to my dice in wargames or to my finesses in bridge.

I think it depends on the unit and the unit formation.  Loose formations like skirmishers work better clipped.   Meanwhile, tight, block formations like Phalanx can be on strips.

I wish with my archers I had gone with a more dispersed approach instead of on strips.  Oh well.

I decided to work on the cavalry forces next.

I made two bases of heavy cavalry (Such as Thessalian and other groups), and two of Companion cavalry.

You can see that I have not finished basing them yet.  I think I will wait until I have a few units ready to all be based at once.

In the above examples, you can see where pre-clipping helped me get the proper formations of wedge on the Companions, and Rhombus on the Heavy cavalry with the green cloaks.  I am going to try and make different formations for the cavalry to make them easier to identify on the battlefield.

Next up is the light cavalry.....

Looks like a big one, as the actress said to the bishop.
