Easter Standing Stones
« on: April 19, 2020, 11:31:17 AM »
Over the Easter weekend I tried to do some activities with the children that had at least tenuous connection with Easter. One of these was looking at Easter Island in the Pacific Ocean.

We found it on a map, read a little about its history and geography and had a go at making some Moai (the famous carved figures) of our own out of fimo and air drying clay.

This was fun, but I could not help thinking that they could perhaps be used as scatter terrain in a fantasy setting.

I chose one head made by each child and one by me and set them on an old CD, with some cardboard and ployfilla.  I then added sand, a few 28mm scale weapons and sprayed the whole thing brown.

I then added flock, a transfer on the shield and painted the thing.

In hindsight I am not sure about the wisdom of using an Islamic design featuring Arabic lettering on the shield as it potentially anchors the piece rather specifically historically. On the other hand, I like how it looks, and in a fantasy setting there is no reason why a human (or non-human!) faction should not speak Arabic.

Fantastic!

Great idea to use them this way as well.

One of those ideas where you wish history were a bit different. A battle around Easter Island heads...I suppose a cannibal raid isn't impossible....
