28mm spacecraft & shuttles
« on: April 25, 2020, 11:19:02 AM »
I've had an idea for a campaign set in a 40k-lite universe for a while and have been collecting elements on and off. One of these elements is ships (I like ships), shuttles, dropships, scifi Hind type carriers and the like and I have been pleasantly surprised at how many different pieces from various toy lines I have been able to pick up to convert.

Still, I was a little surprised to realize when I went to view what I had to find out quite how many I had bought....

A lot of the inspiration was viewing other peoples work on here and other fora so I thought I would repay the favour and put pics up of them here with some figures for scale. I think most will be okay with minimal conversion and a repaint.

First up, a drop ship, an old GI Joe toy.

Another dropship, this is an Avengers Quinjet - this one is subtitled 'Cycle Blast'

A shuttle, this is a 3.75" Starwars T16 Hopper but I think it is a great scale as system shuttle.

Last for now, and my favourite so far, a Paws Patrol 'Jet Command Centre' that will be a heavy drop ship

Lots more to come, including a huge Eisenhorn (40K inquisitor) gun cutter type.

I love re-purposing old toys - especially ones I pick up in charity shops or on FB Marketplace.

That Paw Patrol one is kind of underwhelming given that the PP range, generally, is rich fodder for re-purposed toys.

Great bases for conversions. The last one absolutely has potential!

And I actually have that very Quinjet on my workbench right now :D

The Paws Patrol has the perfect shape for a drop ship and is big enough to get vehicles in, I need to do something to the cockpit to bring it into scale but thats about it. Will be interested in what you do to your Quinjet, its a bit of a minefield getting the correct one as there are so many types.

Speaking of which, this is another kind of Quinjet, bit more of an Mv22 type.

Playmobil is, as always, a great source and I have a number of ships and vehicles. This is more like a civilian survey type but love the Starwarsesque glazing.

Finally, this bad boy. Its from the Batman universe, not sure what it was called and is massive. I bought 2 to use as Marine landing craft but they are a little big  :D. I am going to remove the 'wings', maybe keep the deployable guns and use it as a gun cutter for an Inquisitor.

I did this with a Quinjet for my Grymn army.

Originally picked it up at a Goodwill to use as a dropship for X-Com.

Nice looking ships. Will be interested to see where you will go with them. I really need to start to scour the charity shops for toys so I can do stuff like this.

The "Cycle blast" quinjet was the Winter Soldier release version (there were some design changes from the original yellow canopied one (from "Avengers assemble").

What a great inspirational thread. I'm moved to post some pics of my own conversions if that's okay :)

Thats right, I also have a couple of smaller ones I will post at some point. Too small for shuttles/dropships but good as 1 man fighters.

What a great inspirational thread. I'm moved to post some pics of my own conversions if that's okay :)

Of course the more the merrier!

Really like what Sinewgrab did to that Quinjet, I need to perfect a canopy painting technique, I started by thinking I was going to model the cockpit interiors but its really hard to find enough seat parts and crew figures.

A few more, starting with a very cheap, nasty plastic, minimal detail shuttle, a DC Justice League toy from Mattel.

Moving on to finer things, this was a Mutant Ninja Turtle toy. I saw this on a great blog years ago and bought it cheap on eBay a while back.

This is a fabulous thing I bought to use as a ship but it is such a great oversize vehicle I am using it as a road vehicle for Dredd. Its a GI Joe BUGG vehicle and is unfortunately quite hard to get hold of.

Sticking with Dredd, I looked around for a suitable H-wagon for years and found this, its a Lost in Space toy (be careful as there are 2 very similar and you want this the larger one) which fits the asethetic really well. This is my second, I started converting one, built the cockpit interior with a great clear plastic canopy I spent literally 6 months searching for and then lost it in a house move.

Thanks for the inspiration on this thread.  Over the last week since reading it I've bagged myself both types of Quinjet on eBay.  It appears that the older yellow-canopied one is a bit rarer and can be quite pricey (even used), but I managed to find one that was misnamed, with no other bidders, that I just won at a very good price.

Sinewgrab, that's a cracking paintjob on your Quinjet.

Why, thank you.  I was pretty happy with it, and it sizes well for 28mm.  I almost left the canopy yellow, but decided I didn't want to build an interior.

Those are great, love the elongated landspeeder.  I have a few toys to convert to civilian landspeeders, all are Starwars toys and although the scale is off, adding 28mm seating, cupolas and hatches will cover that up. Having said that I am going to take apart the iconic 'Luke's landspeeder' to change its appearance totally.

Sticking with Starwars, this was a toy I never had as a kid  :'( but my friend had two! Its such a great shape for a transport and I was lucky to buy 2 of them on eBay. Not sure what I am going to do in adding a crew compartment, I've put the Tie fighter cockpit up top as inspiration but am undecided.

Inspiring thread, keep us informed on your progress - I recently made a start on the old Kenner Dash Rendar ship.   It's big but there's lots of game potential for set-pieces at space ports, shady meetings in various deserts, escapes from moon shaped super weapons, and so on.
