I watched the first episode, and then started the second before I got sleepy. Seems okay, looked good anyway, but a bit slow.

Part of it is that Marcia Gay Harden is totally out of place in my opinion. I’m not sure what accent she is meant to have, but she is a turn off.

I enjoyed it. Very atmospheric. A tad slow, but most of us are too used to films that are 75% action, going by at a clip that can only be achieved though CGI. It takes place in the late 17th century, where things were, well, slower.
I don't know why Marcia Gay Harden offends, even though she has a hard time keeping to a light French accent.
I'm most surprised by how much it deviates from the book. Additional characters and plot lines that I didn't remember
made me worry about my own memory (I'm 62), but googling proved I wasn't getting early onset dementia. The show
is more on multi-ethnic conflict/interaction rather than environmental degradation, which was the book's overarching theme.
That said, such is well portrayed. And deals with a place and time few Americans know anything about. Je me souviens.
But then, I'm the guy who always likes historical dramas.....

A lot of shows start off slow but pick up steam.

Filming at night makes it easier to hide all the elements of our modern world that are hard to hide - you really have to work hard to back date almost any where these days. And, yes, I know you can always travel somewhere that will work. But travel costs money, sometimes a LOT of money. So producers will always choose the cheapest workable option. And TV almost always has a smaller budget than a movie (almost).

I watched the first 2 episodes and liked it.Can't understand Englishmen being there though as if this is set in the 1690's France and England was at war.Of course there were renegades on both sides.

I don't think it is set in 1690s. I thought it was set much earlier than that.

I'm looking forward to watching it. I am a sucker for historical dramas, too. Heck, I made it through and enjoyed "Frontier," and that was pretty Hollywood.

I've tried to get through Frontier and I'm only through the second episode of season 2.I like the time period and Jason Momora but it just doesn't seem realistic just like Knightfall. I guess you said it best, just "too Hollywood".

I enjoyed parts of Frontier but other parts were simply ridiculous.
They could go hundreds of miles in no time. Even cross the Atlantic
in days. The combat often was impossible. The heroes would attack a
large group of Redcoats and kill them all as the redcoats just stood around
waiting to be killed. Once the redcoats were attacked but even though they
had loaded guns never fired a shot as the heroes chopped them to pieces.
