WM - I think the bases took as much time to make as it took to paint the minis !!! Sometime I go overboard
Cook - the brown goo is a mixture of red & grey sprues dissolved in a solvent. Just google " Sprue Goo " and you'll see what I mean. It is stringy, sticky and shrinks as it dries but has a lot of uses. It can even hold its shape in an appropriate mould and is great for modelling slime, effluent from pipes etc.
The main problem I find with it ( & I'm going technical here, is that since it is dissolved not melted , finished pieces end with with little holes as it dries )
But again another reason why I suggest never to throw away sprue.
Been using it since I used to build model tanks ( around 40 to 45 years now
