Frostgrave minis and Oathmark
« on: March 17, 2021, 04:39:54 PM »
Oathmark/Dragon Rampant is an upcoming project for me and I'm planning to set the game in the Dark Ages style of Oathmark. That said, a newly opened LGS only carries Frostgrave plastics and I want to support them so they stay open. Are any of the Frostgrave plastics a good fit for the Oathmark aesthetic or are they more medieval?

Depends which kits, but yes, they'd definitely be a good fit - they're from the same manufacturer and have clearly been designed (as have dedicated Oathmark kits) with maximum compatibility in mind. Some of the kits (Knights and Wizards mainly) might be slightly higher-fantasy than the Oathmark humans, but you could easily fix this by kitbashing or by simply following a more muted colour palette to fit the Dark Ages Oathmark aesthetic.

Frostgrave (and North Star kits generally) really are some of the best on the block - be sure to share your creations with us! :)

The fast answer is: yes!
The soldiers and barbarians can be mix-and-matched for a very nice looking result (or the cultists, if you want to have more evil look). From the knight kit you could make heavy infantry, and the gnolls or the snakemen can be used as orcs for example. The only problem could be with the relativly few bows and spears.

I mix and match the figures and also build units from the Frostgrave figures.

Knight body  with an Oathmark human closed helm for a character.

My Necromancer army uses Frostgrave Cultists for some of the forces.

The soldiers and soldiers II can produce more mixed units (militia or armies built from lots of smaller units).

Part of a mercenary archer unit.

If you do have the Human Infantry sets, you have plenty of spare arms to standardise bodies from the Frostgrave sprues.

The Barbarians can build a more Wildlings type force, though you might want to add some green stuff furs.

Mixed Mantic Northern Alliance and Frostgrave Barbarians.

The spearmen are Frostgrave bodies with Northen alliance arms.

Thanks, all, and great examples Ultravanillasmurf!

I think I'll start with the Frostgrave plastics that _best_ match the Dark Ages aesthetic. So...maybe the Cultists? The Soldiers and Barbarians? It looks like the Soldiers and Barbarians are certainly dressed for colder climates than I was anticipating my board be. I was thinking of doing my table up like a Scottish Moor.

If you go for the frostgrave soldiers but you want them to have a dark ages look, just give them round shields and avoid the medieval weapons and helmets. Maybe use some dark ages heads from other ranges or brands.
They are fine figures and worth purchasing.

I think it would be worth asking your LGS if you can order the Oathmark sets through them. That's what I do with mine, most LGS are perfectly willing to order from manufacturers and often have established channels to do it. This helps both of you; you avoid the hassle of shipping costs and get to support your LGS, and they get your business to help them stay afloat. Times are still tough and I try to show loyalty to a quality business where I can.

They can order Oathamark, and I intend to order some, but they already have Frostgrave on the shelf and I’m not sure it’s moving, so was thinking if FG plastics can work with the oathmark aesthetic, I’d pick up some FG and help them out.

That is a good plan.
