Great report, love the photos.  I game with my son in law, and really want to get my nine year old grand daughter into gaming.
I think your next step would be to obtain actual minis to replace the legos, and have you son paint them.

I can recommend visiting the Brikwars forum, it's a wargame using Lego and is generally quite fun to play.
