Looking for a 12th century female knight fig
« on: May 28, 2020, 01:51:41 AM »
Hello Gents,

I hope you're all well.

I'm looking for a 28-32mm mini of a female mid-12th century knight. Preferably a helmet-less woman or a lightly built(?) man with a head easily hacked off for replacing.

In a perfect world I'd like to get her mounted and dismounted, with a spare horse for the latter.

I've recently learned the then 20-ish year old Ermengarde, Viscountess of Narbonne led a company of her knights at the siege of Tortosa through the summer and fall of 1148.

https://everipedia.org/wiki/lang_en/Ermengarde%2C_Viscountess_of_Narbonne

I'm going to make her more fighty than she probably actually was because I want to put her into a game of Lion & Dragon (Dragonne?) Rampant.

I have another reason to find her too, for an equally fighty follow-on idea I'm pondering.

Any suggestions

Thanks.

L

Well the first port of call for female miniatures is Bad Squiddo. Some of her Shieldmaidens could perhaps be of use. GW's Eowyn model is also great. She commands a section of my viking army.

Maybe take a look at the Statuesque female heads or the female Frostgrave soldiers with an eye to putting one on a Fireforge knights or Conquest games body?

For mid-12th century, I like the 2nd Crusade range from Black Tree. I have this set (https://eoeorbisuk.com/collections/feudal/products/fd1003-2nd-crusade-knights-command-4?variant=4539104707) and I think the chap with his arms up would be a good base model. You would have to chop the head off and sculpt the coif around the neck if you're going for bare head, but I think the model is reasonably proportioned to pass as a woman. Oh yeah, the maille chausses are debatable, but I think it's a minor issue.

No idea about a mounted equivalent, I don't have the mounted Black Tree knights.

Those Fireforge Foot Knights are promising. Thanks!

I do like that Black Tree Knight Commander.

Thanks!

Curtey's/1st Corps knights come with separate heads, so you wouldn't need to hack off a head to replace with a more feminine one.  They also look to be on the slighter side of things and could pass off as female.  Mail would probably flatten breasts or at least conceal them so a male figure should be OK.
Doing a google for female knights only seems to come up with ones in plate or in tiny mail bikinis.

Good luck with finding something.  I would love to see what you come up with.

Northstar have some new Oathmark Elf characters that include female fighters.
There are only foot ones (as far as I know), and since some of them have hoods or helmets they don't all have visible elf ears.
Gary, Glynis, and Alasdair (there are three of us, but we are too mean to have more than one login)

Well, I've pitched the idea of an Ermengarde pack to Bad Squiddo because she's an obvious fit.

In the meantime you've pretty well sold me on 1st Corps.

I'm thinking this King:

https://1stcorps.co.uk/product/mec04-late-c12th-early-c13th-king/

And this knight commander (for the cloak as a tie-together):

https://1stcorps.co.uk/product/me27-foot-knights-command/

They're not a perfect match but they come quite close to each other.

Now a question I have is about shields. I lean heavily toward a large heater:

https://1stcorps.co.uk/product/wp18-large-medieval-heater-shield/

Or should I go with a kite? If so, boss or no boss?

The second big question is -- as I have no experience with 1st Corps -- which company's heads will be the better match? Frostgrave, Statuesque, Victoria, Mad Robot? Somebody else?

As always, thanks in advance for any help.

Have you looked at Trent Miniatures for your king?

King John https://www.northstarfigures.com/prod.php?prod=2017

and bare headed https://www.northstarfigures.com/prod.php?prod=2848

If you can get him the Salute figure of Richard I may be useful too as a dismounted version

For your choice of shield for the king I'd suggest the most modern type - large heater.

For the Dame I am torn between a suit of hand me down armour from her brother, father etc.  or the most up to date fashionable suit made to measure from her own private fortune, her patron/husband/lover etc.  So a fantasy figure may be useful for example SHAEDRA OF VESTONIA from Reaper

For mid 12th century you want a kite (large heater), preferably with a rounded top and with a boss.

Also, just so you know, surcoats are very much a late 12th century thing in the West, so those two minis from 1st corps are not a perfect fit. Just a heads up

I've just gleaned this lady, from fleabay for three quid, to lead Herself's FFofL Viking band!
