Elbows' 15mm WW2 Thread (Soviets, Germans)
« on: June 02, 2020, 07:33:06 PM »
Having played a handful of games of Battlegroup in the past, I've always liked the system.  I collected some stuff to start trying it in 28mm a few years back and abandoned the idea shortly after.

One of my buddies and I were waiting for Battlegroup NORTHAG...but were a bit disappointed with the 10mm "ultracast" stuff, and have decided to steer back into classic WW2 Battlegroup.

So...I spent a chunk o' money and started building a Soviet force.  Here is the result of the first few weeks.  A load of vehicles en route from various places in Europe, but as always, knock out the infantry first!

I applaud your proletarian zeal!
Dont let your desire to protect the Revolution from Hitlerite agressors or Trotskyite backsliders turn into praetorianism though. Ok?
We'll be watching...

At this point, I simply assumed that after one or two minor losses I'd be executed or sent to the gulag...so there's that. :D

While not exciting...if I'm chronicling stuff, I'm chronicling stuff!  Some Flames of War entrenchments for use with Battlegroup as various defenses.  A nice little box of pre-painted stuff....that I then immediately re-painted for a more natural look.  FoW had some weird colour choices in their pre-painted scheme.

Will probably pick up the sandbag and wooden log versions in the future.

Looks good!

I’ve based individually but this looks good.

Yeah, at 15mm and playing Russians I decided almost immediately not to individually base.  I simply use wound tokens until a base is removed.

And I'm plowing on...having finished the bulk of my needed basic infantry (other small infantry teams, units, specialists will be needed...but mainline infantry are more or less complete!).

Pardon the poor pictures, quick phone snaps.

A second rifle platoon (third platoon total), an extra 50mm mortar and a sapper squad.

The "so far" army sitting in a tray;

Excellent work. Battlegroup is an outstanding game that works brilliantly in 15mm and at different game sizes. FotR Russians (Just need infantry I have most of the motor pool needed) will probably be my next force after I finish my British 1944+. I’m basing individually but can see the benefits of multi basing especially in horde like groups of Russians.

Keep up the good work,

Adding some more armour options and a few extra mortars.

Finished a few more units, and got in a great game of Battlegroup today.

The current Soviet force:

Very nice indeed!

Is the cloth/matt a commercially available one?

It is an old, Version 1 "Steppe" mat from Deepcut Studios.  A few months ago they released a new "Steppe" mat in Version 2 (probably nicer art, etc.).  No experience with the latter one, so the one in the picture is not technically available anymore.

The horde is growing...and I've been taking too many mediocre pics, so that's all that's being put up!

Fact #106: BA-64 Scout Cars are adorable. (repaints)

Repainted this IL-2.

Repainted this P-39.

Repainted this Yak-1. (yes, the decals are old, some are still setting...but overall, not very successful)

I've received a ton of vehicles lately, so the armour portion will get kicked into high gear.  Here is a trio of T-70 light tanks:

Oh, and forgot about these support teams I painted:

And another platoon of infantry - PSC this time.  They're nicer than I first thought.  Don't match well on the same base as FoW, but they would be fine on the table together.
