Chinese buildings WIP
« on: August 05, 2009, 11:49:28 AM »
I decided to have a go at making a Chinese town. Foolishly I was trying to make it suitable for 1850's Taipings and 1930's Tong etc. and all in between. I am happy in that I think they look Chinese but cannot help think something is missing. They are probably a bit too basic and wargamey if you know what I mean. These were going to be a table edge and then I would have built full buildings for the other side of the street as it were. I dont think I can do 1930's without a European hotel or similar which would make a good centre point but what would be the earlier equivalent? I think I shall knock these on the head and start over doing two seperate sets. Anybody got any bright ideas?

Looking great as they are, mate. Really like the lattice windows.  8)

You know I'm having trouble with my own Chinese terrain at the moment, so I'm not sure how much use I can be, but for an earlier period setting, I would think a high ranking official's residence would be appropriate, or the office of the local prefect of police (or whatever the quivalent is).

Lovely buildings :-* :-*
Tell us how you made the windows they look great ???
Keep them don't start over.
You said something is missing? Is it not just that there is no activity. Every time you see these types of buildings they are always surrounded by loads of people, market stalls and cars. The pictures are always very busy. Yours, I think, just needs a bit of life.

As for your others buildings I have a similar problem. I am building a town for pulp games I want it to have a middle east/north Africa feel to it but every time I look for an idea for a government type building I always end up with a European building.
Like this for a simple building.

Everything else I can find is to fancy and would be very difficult to scratch build.
I am not sure how generic this type of building is?
Doc Twilight has a Shanghai setting maybe in his research he has found some good buildings that may also suit your project

I agree with JollyBob and Gamer Mac - they look great as they are! The lattice effect on the windows is brilliantly done, so I have to echo Gamer Mac here - how did you do it?

Definitely don't start over with them - build more, and like Gamer Mac says, when you have a bustling street scene, with buildings on either side, you'll have the appearance you're looking for.

Can't wait to see more of these - great work!

I hate you  :D

No seriously,

they look good, but I have no idea what buildings should look like at all,

it would be interesting to know whether a european hotel or rich quarter residences would have a different feel.

but the look good lots of patience went into those especially the wooden lattice.

How about watching 'Once upon a time in China' for what's missing on the buildings, the one with Jet Lee.

Good looking stuff though  :)

Am I right in thinking that the roof is the TM Terrain pantile roof sheet that they made stock of?

cheers

James

*Edit* Ooo ooo ooo, lanterns, that was it  :D Big red ones  ;)
cheers

It looks like plastic canvas (Granny grating?) with sections cut out.

I've used it for windows on 20mm buildings before.

Thanks all.

The lattice is just plastic grid with spars cut out, I bought it from an embroidery store. I also have various sizes to play around with.

JimB - yes it is the TM Terrain piece and sadly I am running out fast. They do not appear to do it anymore :'(

I may do a few more and hang lanterns across the street etc. and see how it looks then.

Not as much as I hate him. ;)

Svennn The DH nut, sorry, Svennn  has come up trumps with these, top stuff, no need to scrap them, build more and fill the street. :)

As the others have said, some lanterns, a chicken(?) and clutter it will look spot on.
All you need now is a waterfront too with lots of sampans. ;)

Thats the stuff but most of mine came in 2' x 1' sheets so I may have a little left over ::)
