Zulu War Cavalry
« on: July 09, 2020, 08:00:21 AM »
Hi Guys

A couple of questions.
Zulu war cavalry 28mm , which look the best ?..Empress or Perry?
Secondly do they work together?  , as the Perrys look a bit smaller , and the horses look way smaller ??
Your thoughts ?
Cheers

I've got some coming from both firms in the post right now. I'll let you know how they look together!  :)

While both do look very nice, for me the Perry ones edge it very slightly just as far as the sculpts go (there is one Empress horse pose in particular that I'm not really a fan of). But Perry don't do Native Horse so I decided to get some from each company and hope for the best.

Hi Plynkes
That sounds great , thanks for that .
I wonder if they fit together .
Did you notice Perry do some dismounted 17th Lancers as well , including Horse holders excellent for skirmish
I dont mind the Empress Cav .. just not the lancers
I agree the Perry ones are nice , but  so are the Empress .
However the Empress ones dont have the Lance  vertical , and look like they just contacted a target , if you know what I mean, I prefer the vertical look.
Funnily enough I only want the riders , dont need the horses ..not even for earth .. I am mounting Mine on Martian  Gashants for Space 1889 >> lol!!!..
You probably just lost all interest right ..lol
I will send  you some pics.
Cheers mate

Hey, I may be the colonial guy around here, but I have a real soft spot for Space 1889! It may not feature in my tabletop battle games these days, but I have fond memories of the RPG and the board game "Temple of the Beastmen."

I haven't purchased any lancers, being a bit more interested in gaming with the irregular horse and the MI. Haven't bought any dismounted figures either. I was planning on giving TMWWBK a shot, and you don't really need dismounted figures for that. Might get some later on though, just for completeness.

I much prefer the Perry Miniatures Zulu War range for my collection. Okay, they don't do a dismounted Natal Carbineers command or dismounted Imperial Mounted Infantry, but a bit of modelling can sort that out.

I'm not into painting the British Lancers at the moment, as I prefer the volunteers and IMI.

I've not updated my Zulu War project on this forum as yet, but I'll show some here. I'm just working on the dismounted Imperial Mounted Infantry from Perry Miniatures.

I just need to model an officer to go with the bugler.

Best wishes,
Helen

Thanks Dylan for your kind words. I've been working on this collection for the past two plus years. Loads more to show, but I'll leave that for another time.
My other Natal Carbineers troop commander. Two troop commanders an a overall squadron commander which is the base with the bugler.

Here we go. Perhaps not as useful as I first thought, given that I didn't know your guys will be riding gashants on Mars, but it might help...

Here we have a Perry Frontier Light horseman, flanked by Empress Native Horse and a Boer from the Transvaal Burgher Force (mmm... burgers, I had a lovely Wagyu burger last night).

And an Empress volunteer horsemen of one of those pointy-hatted outfits (I forget which one) flanked by a Perry Natal Carbineer and Mounted Infantryman.

I didn't want any lancers (at least not yet), so I can't help down to that level, but at least it gives you an idea. Personally I'll be perfectly happy to mix these guys on the tabletop. It's interesting that you assumed Perry figures are smaller (not a criticism, I assumed it myself), but the Perry FLH guy actually seems a little larger than the Empress NNH fellow next to him. Quite the opposite of what I expected. On the whole I think the Perry ones are slightly larger than Empress. Nonetheless, I'm fine with using them together, as I said.

Very useful comparison and you're spot on- one tends to assume that the Perry stuff would be slighter then the Empress stuff.

Thanks for posting  8)
