Early Imperial Roman - Victrix and Warlord
« on: July 11, 2020, 12:29:56 AM »
Love the Victrix figures, and use them for Carthaginians, Spanish and Numidians.

How do the Early Imperial Romans compare to Warlord's?

I would like to use both, predominately Victrix for the legion, auxilia and generals, but would like to use Warlord for the Archers and Praetorians - are they going to look good in the same army (not within the same unit)?

Cheers

Hi Darren, I can't speak specifically about the Warlord/Victrix comparison for Roman figures but I can compare their Celts/Gauls.  I had what I presume is the same problem as you do. Victrix provide the core troops but not the "specialists".  I found Warlord's Gallic archers were OK with Victrix warrior units.  They would have looked out-of-place mixed in the same unit but in the same army no problem.

Also, you have to get those archers from somewhere and I don't think Victrix plan to release any.

I’m just putting an all auxiliary force together myself!

I’m using Victrix for infantry and cavalry, Warlord for archers and a bolt thrower.
Firstly, the plastic from Victrix is superb, but fiddly. That’s the draw back of any plastic kit though. The attention to detail is again superb.
Warlord are really nice figures too.
But there is a size difference, in fact quite considerably so!
The Warlord auxiliary archers are like hobbits by comparison. This is exasperated by the fact that half of them are kneeling.

If I’m honest it really doesn’t bother me, as I’m not mixing them together, the figures are really nice sculpts too. So I’m sure when finished it won’t be a big deal.
Weirdly the Warlord auxiliary plastics are quite big (I’ve owned a pack of these in the past)
They have very dynamic poses though and I prefer the more relaxed Victrix models.

I notice Victrix sells actual Legionary models in two separate sets, one dynamic poses the other marching.
A millionaire trapped in a peasants body!

As well as Warlord I would recommend you check out the Aventine Imperial Roman range. Very nice figures,

Aventine are currently accepting no further orders as II has caused a flood that they are unable to cope with.  lol

I’ve recently taken a picture of my earlier and Victrix legionnaires and there’s a bit of a size
Left to right warlord legionnaires, warlord auxiliaries, victrix legionnaires

Hope this post works

Here are some direct comparisons of Victrix to Warlord EIR.

Wow, these last two posts show much bigger variations than I have seen before.  I know that Victrix are at the larger end of 28mm as I have some myself. Are the Warlord plastics particularly small even compared to their own metal ranges? Do they vary from range to range and box to box?

Only their EIR are small, auxiliaries, barbarian plastics are more like Victrix in size. I think the EIR plastic scorpion set is larger too.

I bought the plastic scorpion set too from warlord, and that is the same small size.
I’ve put converted auxiliary crew on it, so I’m not that worried.

All the figures above are nice figures, and I would be happy with any of the sets.
Fortunately as an experienced gamer I’m fully aware of the size difference between these sets so it’s not a problem.
I do however feel sorry for someone who maybe completely new to gaming who’s never rolled a dice or painted a figure in his/her life, as this could prove very confusing.

Does anyone know if Victrix plan to do archers?

For that matter can anyone put up a picture of Warlord western archers against Victrix auxiliaries  please?

Not at this moment, but if you check out the last picture above of the two standard bearers your not a million miles away.
The difference is quite remarkable.
It doesn’t look wrong using the 3’ rule.

Victrix said that they will do archers, it's just a question when. The confirmed released for this year are Dacians, Persians (big range), Norman infantry and maybe Baverians. Then next year I expect  Norman cavalry, Roman Archers, Romano-British and etc... .
