Picked up “Infamy, Infamy” along with a few trees (a good start to any project!) and a pack of Victrix Early Roman Auxiliaries.  Always fancied an army of Romans, but I don’t have the patience for it.  Maybe a little skirmishing may be fun or if I don’t manage more than a dozen or so minis, I could always use FFoL with them.

Don’t want to distract too much from my other projects, but it could be fun....we will see.  I quite fancy skirmishes of desperation in the Teutoburg forest against some angry Germans...

Nice ghostly look to Varian's lost pals  ;) :)

Seriously, it's a good start. Starting with terrain is probably an option that we should all consider. I've learn't that since lock down began. I've got a lovely 6' x 4' table and no terrain tiles or matt  lol I'm socially shielding still too  o_o

As with ALL of your little diversions this is good stuff.
May I suggest you aim for FFoL first, then build up to Infamy Infamy.

Makes sense.   This is a mere mini diversion....

Atheling...definitely, scenery makes ANY game in my opinion.

As for “ghostly” appearance, tbh I want them to look hunted....and I like the idea of using the torches to create reflective light.  I have only ever achieved it once before ( on my Burrows and Badgers mage).

Take a shufti at this

Either as
Teuterburger, a few weeks later (Could be done using Osprey's  'Broken Legions')  OR
For the retribution game when (live) Legionaries come across the prostrate decaying dead.

Hmmm....I’ve done skeleton armies in the past mate.  I managed a whole 40k imperial guard army of them.

You could say, I’ve done them to death! Lol

Going to stick with the living for this one  I think.

 ;)

So, someone will no doubt cry that the Germanic people’s lived in square or sausage shaped houses....well I don’t have those, this is what I have from Hovels so it will have to do.

Obviously will need a fire pit, and be made to look lived in.

Just for fun .

Have you thought of adding period painted plaster to the buildings?
Admittedly It does offend modern sensibilities though  lol
(I always fancied on doing a skirmish game based on Chelmsford 123. But I can never find the time to sculpt the lead characters.)

I would find that odd.  I love all things antiquity....turning artefacts into models ...not me.

Edit:  I’m a pillock! Sorry mate I misread your post thinking you actually meant grinding down real bloody artefact plaster to use on the models!!!   Now I see you meant just to paint it to look like the “originals”!  Spec savers......here I come!

Talking antiquity..and Romans....if you have never visited Vindolanda on Hadrians Wall, I urge you to do so.  Fascinating museum there as well.    I was left with the distinct impression that a Romans were forever losing their sandals....they had so many found there!

Also...if you take five minutes to read a few of the famous Vindolanda Tablets (you can find translations on the net), they are fascinating.

The poor auxiliary troops garrisoned there, probably displaced from their home country on purpose, would have found it cold damp and lonely.

Many of the tablets (equivalent to modern day letters or emails) are personal to and from troops stationed there.

One chap received a parcel....

“...I have sent  you...
pairs of socks from Sattua,
two pairs of sandals and
two pairs of underpants“

Great stuff!

No worries.

Ok, I sanded the settlement compound last night and added a fire pit.  Ready for painting.

I also got the trees based.  Still need painting and some grass.  Just a bit worried though...at this rate, hardly Teutoburg forest.....more Teutoburg thicket!

Going to have to save the pennies to get more trees....

Now, not being one to pass an opportunity to double up the game and get more from any modelling, I may want to do a little RPG type gaming over this (always wanted a pine forest - and before anyone says it,  yes, Teutoburg is a mixed forest with deciduous trees too.) and I can see packs of wolves, the odd bear etc roaming them.  Had a look in my small lead pile and found a pair of wild boar (admittedly, a little Asterix looking) and a pack pony that will double up as my Roman pack mule (needed for Infamy)

No wolves though ( a few werewolves!) and my bear was based for cowboys! Ah well, something else to save for....
