Oathmark battle report
« on: July 23, 2020, 10:13:22 PM »
Another Oathmark battle report up on my blog

https://zacgaming.wordpress.com/2020/07/23/oathmark-campaign-game-3-redux/

It is a bit long but there are a lot of pictures to break it up. In a solo game my, mostly, Northstar plastic Elves take on a mixed force of Dwarves and Goblins. Many catapults were harmed in the production of this battle report.

Nice reports! I usualy dont like battle reports, but these were pretty good.
For the artillery, you could make a house rule, for example -1S, or -1dice, if the crew is below 50%.

I was thinking adding a +1 modifier to the target numbr if they were below half. I do want to play with the unit a few more times though  to see hiw often this is an issue.

Another try at the same scenario since I actually played it incorrectly the first time

Great again!
Some remarks:
- I usually use level 3 wizards, because 3 dice for spellcasting is much more reliable, and 3 spells can have also better options. But yes, its twice as expensive, and a failed activation can cause bigger problems.
- for dwarfs I almost always use the spell with +2 move (dont have the book here), and for defending the shield (3) is also great (its much easier to stop a cavalry charge with it).
- artillery works best against grouped large, or enormous creatures and big units, and the elves here had none of them.
- maybe skeletons would be more fitting allies for elves, because the revenants are also expensive, so its not really possible to have more units, as with an elf-only army.
- in this scenario, the teleport spell of the elves could have been devestating (with a higher level spellcaster, because the casting number of 9 is pretty hard to hit).

I certainly did not notice.

It is an intriguing scenario, you have to make some important decisions about the make up of your force - do you want to deploy large units as they may be unsupported for a long time, fast units to get to the win zone. What about your reinforcements? Good Activation numbers mean they are more likely to get on the board. Speed is going to be important as you only get to try (emphasise try) to deploy a limited number of units per turn.

Part of the issue with the scenario is that if you play this as part of a campaign then you don't get to fine-tune your force at all. You pick your army in advance. If you are doing it as a one-off game then it is an interesting puzzle.

Good Activation numbers mean they are more likely to get on the board.

Since the game lets you roll two or even three dice to activate the odds on not activating are quite low. Even for the humans. It has an impact but it isn't as large as people think because of the 2d10 system.

In an Elf force that Level 3 Spellcaster is a large part of your point cost. I agree that it is useful but I can't see spending that many points.

- artillery works best against grouped large, or enormous creatures and big units, and the elves here had none of them.

Explosive Ammunition makes it a lot more effective. It also has a huge range. 40'. It can cover almost the entire table

- maybe skeletons would be more fitting allies for elves,

Halflings are my ultimate plan :-)

- in this scenario, the teleport spell of the elves could have been devestating (with a higher level spellcaster, because the casting number of 9 is pretty hard to hit).

Now you are making me want to try it again with that spell  :D

Yes, elves desperetly need some cheap allies, especially for this scenario... Im getting more and more curious about your halflings!

Thanks! Interesting to see, how you approached the question. I just made them as an auxiliary troops, You as a complete faction. I gave them a base defense of 9 (because their small size and agility), but made them unable to use armor, spear and shield at one time.
Why You have defense 8 at the archers with light armor? Why didnt you make nimble unit?

I’d give slingers aimed fire and make them nimble, at the very least.
